Used the BP machine at gp surgery yesterday, the first reading came out as 157/84, followed by 173/88 and 171/88 readings were taken between 15.38 and15.41, anyone have any ideas about why it jumped up so high in the space of a minute or two, stay safe in this bad weather x

White Coat Syndrome, Jenny, where it goes higher when at the surgery/hospital.
I agree with Celtic. I can get that too when I think the visit might not go well - ha ha...
Blood pressure is not constant. Often an average of 3 readings will be taken. White coat syndrome is usually when your readings are higher when taken at the surgery than if they were taken, for instance, at home. Are those BP readings higher than your past BP readings?
