I have some concerns regarding effectiveness of such a strategy but doing nothing condemns our youth. they will learn nothing from our experience.
Taking action aids my conscience, that harsh lessons learnt shall not be in vain.

I too am hope it is successful, but, you know what kids are like - hide something and it piques their interest. The more you tell them not to do something, the more likely they are to rebel.

Reducing the social acceptance of smoking, removes peer pressure from young impressionable characters. Standing idly by whilst our nations future suffers the same fate fills me with dread.

I couldn't agree with you more.
The packet was not the reason most of us smoked with a ban on public places and the workplace stopping more than cutting advertising ever did. The cigarette companies need new smokers and stopping that is worthwhile when as smokers we know where it leads.
When the highest percentage of smokers are raised in families and areas where cigarette smoking is considered normal/ acceptable behaviour then reversing this trend by all means possible takes the worthwhile action necessary for change.
Continued smoking does seem to occur more where it's accepted as the norm, so true, anything that reverses the trend is to be encouraged by what ever means. Even if only changing the packaging.
I have seen the young ones with foreign cigarettes that are smuggled in and sold by immigrants on the street. The laws got around with smuggled ones that needs stopping first when the police can do that children standing around smoking are not looking at packets for labels.
Branding is very subtle. Millions and millions are spent on it all over the world year on year. The brand of fags you smoke is almost like a club when you're young.
...... and then you're hooked!
I'm for plain packaging, if only I'd not seen that pretty pale blue pack with a sweet camel on it a few years ago I don't think I'd have started smoking again - sad I know but there we are. (I stopped after a few years but it was a very dumb move. If only I knew then what I know now).
