I ust thought people would like to know I live in a two bedroom bungalow but as my spare bedroom is classed as a box room less than 70 square feet you don't have to pay bedroom tax

Hi teaky, we had some discussion about this a week or so ago and apparently it's just a rumour and not true. Have a look at the link below:-

housing.org.uk/policy/welfa...

which states:-

"Do the regulations define a bedroom?

No. The Government’s view is that it is for landlords to specify the size of the property and this ought to match what is on any tenancy agreement and reflect the level of rent charged. The bedroom tax will not take account of whether a room is a single or a double bedroom. A room either is a bedroom or is not a bedroom.

There have been rumours circulating on social media that room under 70 sq ft do not count as a bedroom - but this is not the case. The information seems to be based on a mis-reading of the Housing Act regarding overcrowding. Read our explanation for further detail."

Hope this is helpful. Libby

I do think this is misleading regarding box rooms I work within housing and have taken numerous calls regarding box rooms - some rooms you would only be able to fit a cot in. Unfortunately the bedroom tax still applies. :(

when itook tenancy of this house I was told the box room was only for a carer to stay overnight I am not allowed to have anybody stay in that room thi is a box room and I don't have to pay bed room tax

Hi Teaky That might be the case in your instance - but you will find that most people who live in social housing/ council housing even if they think they have a box room their tenancy agreements will specify how many bedrooms so the bedroom tax will apply. Libby has provided a link housing.org.uk. My advice for any one who has concerns about the bedroom tax read this website or speak to your landlords for clarity.
