I inhaled some egg fried rice and coughed for hours thought I was going to choke and afraid I might break a rib since I have Ostoporosis until eventually three grains of rice popped out. I take my time now and lay the table well before hand and rest before eating my food so that Im not so breathless, I always ensure I drink plenty of water since I have Sjogrens, I was told it is quite a common problem to inhale food with COPD

Any foreign bodies inhaled into the lungs can be a source of infection using the huffing technique is more successful and less painful than coughing.

If the offending item can not be removed within hours don't wait for infection setting in before seeking medical attention. Acting quickly can prevent pneumonia taking hold.

Thank you everone. Thought I was the only one: got the cat on the ear the other day with a piece of mince.

Still laughing about the poor cat being hit by the mince. He needs to learn to duck! I leap into action (not a pretty sight) when Pete chokes a lot as he sometimes flakes out for a few seconds with his dinner tray on his lap. I have not always been quick enough to prevent dinner et al landing on the floor! xxx

Seems a common problem - I inhaled cornflakes weeks ago and am still feeling the effect ...worse SOB - don't know with all the stuff I have coughed up whether its out or still in lungs ?! had throat fungal infection as a result, however, sputum test showed no infection following week - maybe I should try again? All so confusing - is it me getting over exacerbation which can take time or is it things still in lung, or is it aftereffects of inhaling food? My consultant has referred me to language /voice specialist - to my great surprise - saying there are exercises to strengthen the muscles involved ! will let you know what happens.

Pete has sarc and has choked on peas, bread, cake and other things so he knows how you feel taffydaffy. Pete also gets a dry mouth sometimes so maybe Sjorens is on the lines of sarc? Who knows but wishing you well anyway. xxxx
