Good Afternoon Everybody

I hope everyone is feeling well on this cold Tuesday.

We are about to start reviewing our information sheet 'How to get the best from your Doctor'

Can anyone offer any suggestions for making it better, or do you think there is something missing?

It makes sense to ask the people we are making the information sheet for, so have a look at the link for the information sheet below and write any comments in this blog.

Cheers

In take a friend could I suggest they take the list in as time is short and I am slow getting from the waiting room I am hardly in the door before my appointment is over with breathing back and able to speak again time up. The list would state my business long before I am able cutting wasted time for both myself and the doctor.

I think it's important to remember that the G, in G.P. stands for General. Your GP won't necessarily have an encyclopedic knowledge of your condition like some of us now have. Some have an interest or expertise in lung disease but many don't. I do sometimes think some patients lack patience - I understand how frustrating it can be feeling so ill but I think courtesy is important. I think I may just be incredibly lucky with my GP - but when I go and see him very often he asks me to tell him what I think is wrong and what I think I might need because he doesn't see that many patients with sarcoidosis.

I think the leaflet is very good - I'll definitely use it next time I see my consultant because I think it is slightly more relevant to that situation.

Maybe a little difficult, but how to complain if you don't get the level of advice necessary. At the very least, what you can do if you are not happy with what they say to you.

As we know, many on here have had appalling treatment from their GPs, they need to know how they can do something to improve that.

I find the method of fastening them to their chair with cable ties and inserting live match heads under their finger nails gets their attention...

Making a list of what you want to say is a really good tip. You can't forget what you were going to ask about then. If I'm going to the hospital, or have the ATOS Doctor popping in, I try and make sure i have a copy of my prescription counterfoil, which is the repeat order form for next time. I usually have two pages full, so get 2 lots of counterfoils.

On one occasion I dropped my list in a couple of days before my appointment, so the doctor had time to go through it. It helped a lot as he had been able to find a few things out ahead of me seeing him.

Thoughts of you entering your Doctor's room made me laugh, Gordon. Poor bloke, he will be hiding under the desk!! "smiley face"

Take your questions on a sheet with you and ask your Doctor to read them. Your major inqiry being top of the list.Your Doctor may not be able to deal with all your queries in one appointment, maybe you could ask to see the practice nurse about some of your questions, they may be able to help.Could you be seen at your pharmacy insread of the doctor? Pharmacists are very knowledgeable nowadays.By releaing time spent with the Doctor you are making available more time for them to see needy patients. Remember also that DNA's(Do Not Attend's cost time and money and is down right rude). If your Doctor cuts you short without answering your questions ,remember he has a lot of patients to see and time is limited

Looks good and useful to me. I shall print it off and follow advice.

Thank you

where you mention changing doctor, please can you add that you can change practice not just doctor, as many will feel uncomfortable staaying insame practice if they feel let down by a GP within it.

Also, mention that you can ask for records results (eg I just asked for my spiro results , and I also checked what the sputum was tested for to make sure that the fungal infection was included in that) a big thing is CLARIFICATION, so I have asked the doc to explain further/ again/ write it down so I could google later etc.

hi jo.would help if sum gps could either read xray reports and inform patients they have either copd or cystic fibrosis.both are dangerous left non attended.my old gp did that last june.left me unaware for 8month until i got chronic bronchitus.at xmas.and it was a locum wat sent me for a scan.so i should imagine old gp must have thought he was gods gift ignoring my june xray.well wont be ignoring the next lot of mail.i have a new gp now .same building different practise .

This is a good leaflet. I always go with Pete to see the GP as he often forgets what he wants to say so two heads are better than one. On the whole we have been satisfied with our doctor and are not afraid to speak up or go back again. Pete has also spoken to the Pharmacist on a couple of occasions and found him very helpful. xxx
