Hi

Oxygen is not guaranteed for everybody . Nor is it suitable for everybody .

I had a blood test, taken from wrist over 2 days , which shown I was ok, I am severe 28 percent.

Oxygen is only used to maintain other vital organs.

Hi

I was diagnosed in 2006 with severe 34 percent ,

I must have missed mild and moderate.

I had a private doctors report several years previously indicating signs of emphysema , total ignored ,like you do.

I am 66.

yes know what you mean ..think you are doing well at 66 has you were diagnosed 6 years ago with severe.. did you pack up smoking when you were told.. i packed up just like that when i was told has may have frightend me a little has was always led to belive that emphysema was a death sentance.

Hi Music, I have been on Seretide 125 Evohaler for several years, then Spiriva, then both and since last week the same as you Seretide 500 accuhaler ( plus Spiriva and Ventolin ) , not been prescribed oxygen as yet ( awaiting assessment ) but what do you think of it? I found the first inhaler blasted the shot of medicine straight to the back of my throat and I sounded more and more like a darlek every day, but this 'accuhaler' seems to be at the back of my tongue instead of my lungs! ( remember to rinse, gargle, wash it away!

It could be years if ever you get prescribed oxygen depending on things like retaining c02, and wether your other organs need it or not, there's lots of info to your right where it says ' Popular tags in questions' I'm hoping I can have it for exercise, gardening, housework etc., I know I've had copd for well over twenty years, it realy is slowed down by giving up smoking , well done for packing in,best thing you can do plus keep up the exercise and learn about breathing techniques etc, most of all dont worry and focus on all the good things in life! ;) x

Hi

More or less , it is not a death sentence , you have to change you lifestyle , smoking, diet, exercise , avoidance .

You have to be aware of pollutants which can trigger a reaction, and avoid. Pulmonary Rehab may be suitable ask your GP. For a referral .

Hi

I was first diagnosed in 1996 with mild copd , am now 42 years old , severe stage 31 % now . I'm not on oxygen . I'm on Seretide 500 , Spiriva , salbutamol. l have been for many years now . I find these medications are a great help ! Unlike yourself i didn't take heed of doctor and continued smoking . I'm in the middle of trying to quit, had two failed attempts so far but determined to get there .. You seem to be doing the right things Stopping smoking , well done you ! exercise and a good diet all helps. Good advice above .

I was diagnosed in 2011. Straight in at very severe 27%. I got breathless AFTER giving up smoking. Such is life. My O2 levels at rest are on the borderline of 88-90% so I'm on a very small dose of oxygen. 1/2 litre per minute for 15 hours. Usually when I'm asleep. I still work at my part-time job I had before getting diagnosed and feel better now than I did then as I have had proper tests and am being given the correct medication. Seretide 250 and Spiriva. Salbutamol for emergencies. I get around ok and just get breathless when overdoing it.

Like Puff, I had no symptoms until after I quit smoking.

Diagnosed last year, I am moderate at 55%. Although I get breathless, it doesn't really affect me too much.

I am positive, I exercise quite a lot and eat healthily. I try to avoid people with infections, but as I work, that is not always possible.

I am on Spiriva and am 58.

Hello Music

I posted this yesterday on another newcomers blog to show them life goes on so here it is for you! You can still have a very good life with copd. I have emphysema and was diagnosed 13 years ago, I am now very severe, stage 4, and on oxygen 15/24, the oxygen is not so much to help the breathlessness but to protect the main body organs to ensure they get enough oxygen to work properly. I go out nearly every day either with my husband or by myself, I drive or use my mobility scooter, I spend days out with my family and have holidays in our little caravan and at family that live away. I potter in my little garden and look after my two little shih tsus. So really you can see my life has not altered much except that I gave up work at 67, I am 70 going on 50 now, and do things more slowly and with rests in between to get my breath. I think I live a full and happy life for someone my age and I posted this just so that you could see that a good life goes on as long as you eat well, avoid infection, excersise and take your meds. My glass is three-quarters full. Oh I forgot to say, I have appointments for assessment for pulmonary lung valves, there is a link to a blog if you are interested: bitz-and-bobz.co.uk/copd/20.. If there is one near you join a Breathe Easy group, you will find them very helpful, details are on the BLF home page.
