I have a 14 year old grand daughter who has a virus with a productive cough.

My granddaughter is a runner to the point of obession. She runs in all weathers, day or night. She now has a nasty productive virus and still runs. Should she be protecting her lungs. Her mother doesn't know what to do for the best.

I guess if she's aiming to be ready for Rio it might be worth getting a sputum sample off to the lab. As we all know it pays to diagnose and treat anything as quickly as possible to stop any permanent damage being done. I have heard of damage being done to lungs at a young age but not actually being found untill much later on in life. I guess its mums call at the end of the day.

I've always been told that if you have a cold or virus above the neck you can carry on exercising. Below the neck then you should rest up. My Bronchiectasis is believed to stem from infections I had as a baby and in my late teens so maybe she should err on the safe side - then again I suppose as dall says its her mums call. One thing though is it seems odd that a virus would cause a productive cough.

Hi Annie, would think it best for your granddaughter to ease up on the running to give her body a chance to heal itself. Maybe some gentle exercise indoors with rest in between would be best for now x

Thanks for the response. Agree that it should be mum's call!! I read these blogs with interest - just didn't want G.daughter to have lung problems later on.

Thanks, Lnne. I know mother is aware of this but running can be an addiction. Whatever the weather, the child has to run. I just want H. to think of the future for her lungs. At the end of the day, mother has to call the tune.
