Hi, Think I mislead you with my request about oxygen. It is a oxygen concentrator I am looking for that I can carry round with me.

I am already prescribed with an oxygen concentrator and portable cylinder for at home but I believew there are one's that can be carried like a handbag

Hi Seyre, yes I know what you mean I was looking at them on Ebay. I don't know that we can get them from our oxygen provider, be lovely if we could !

I think they are a bit pricey to buy. I was looking at one you could hire and that was £95 a month !! there was a gentleman on here the other night with one to sell I believe it was over £1000. I,d love to have one...so much easier than the ambulatory oxygen I have.

The firms that sell this type of concentrator often have second hand/refurbished machines for sale. If you Google second hand/refurbished porfable oxygen concentrator..... and see what comes up

I am just looking at one for my holiday,which would be like you say oxygen concentrator,the site i looked at was pure02,from these you can hire or purchase,the one i am getting is about 6inches high and weight is 28oz with battery life of 6 hours,hope this is some help

I have an Airsep Focus which sounds like the one you mean. It's about 6" tall and weighs 0.8kg. It has only one setting (2 lpm on pulse). They aren't cheap, about £1,800 but there was one for sale, nearly new advertised in the last issue of the BLF magazine for £1,000. Google for a company called Smile if you're interested in one (they also sell reconditioned units) and they can arrange for you to have a trial to see if it suits you.

I have an airsep Freestyle (Freestyle has 3 settings) which I purchased from Smile rehab. I would recomend them as they allow you to try before you buy and thereis no 'hard sell' I had a trial for a week with out paying a deposit & they did not even want a credit card number. They left it for me to contact them, no phone calls or presure at all. They do do referbished & secondhand Portable Oxygen equipment several different makes.

May I be so bold as to advise all seekers of portable oxygen concentrators; they are not suitable for everyone. The flow rates do not always replicate those supplied from a cylinder and as one becomes breathless through excertion (the nature of portability) the volumes need to be adjusted andd not all portable concentrators can produce such flow rates.

Additionally, your oxygen supplier will provide a portable oxygen concentrator if your clinical team agrees it will be advantageous for you.

If you are suited to a portable concentrator, it will be supplied as a 'replacement' for your cylinders - either or, but generally not both - so be aware of that fact.

Yes - just to echo what "pickled" has said. Portable concentrators are now available through the NHS - speak to your respiratory nurse etc about them - they aren't the miracle answer for everyone - and also you cannot take them outside the UK. But there are companies that hire the portable concentrators for use outside the UK.

So before you go ahead and buy please check out what is available through the NHS - at least you can try them out for a while (if appropriate) and you won't have wasted upto £3000 on something you may not use much.

I don't believe all the oxygen suppliers do portable concentrators. Ours doesn't.

Have an Airsep Focus. It is the lightest concentrator and the most useful for exercise. I ballroon dance wearing mine, and I don't feel I have to slow down. But it can only provide 2 lpm pulse so it won't be suitable for many. It is also quite expensive at between £2000 and £2500. I bought mine with a retirement lump sum (it was that or a cruise!).

The devices can be bought from Pure O2, or Smile Rehab

Hi I have an Aisep Freestyle with two battery belts which can in theory gives me 10 hrs at 3 liters a minute. The problem comes if you want to rely on them over night, I don't think it's man enough even plug into the mains. The cost is quite inhibitive as the unit is £3000 + and the belts are £400 each.

As to NHS concentrators I'm told they're an either or with portable oxygen and only give 1.5 hours of mobility so not as good as say liquid oxygen which on 2 liters a minute will 15 + hours.

Hi have an Airsep Freestyle portable concentrator for sale very small and compact does up to 4 LPM on pulse mode and is the size of a small hand bag Approx 25x25x15 cm

thanks to everyone who responded to our request for info on the portable "handbag" style concentrators, we looked at various company's & the prices are daunting , aside from the machine them selves what do these firms quote for extended warranty's ? we were quoted £1,600 for a so called" gold" 4 year service contract with a stair lift from acorn last year- quickly discovering that being disabled is an exspensive business, our oxygen supplier ( air liquide ) told us we could have a smaller one litre cylinder provided that they get another hoof from the hospital otherwise not possible, having worked in retail we know that any second hand concentrators ones bought don't allow the warranty's to be carried over to another person.
