hi btype...rescue packs are your pack of steroids and antibiotics you have on standby should you have the beginning of a chest infection ..therefore hopefully avoiding a full blown exacerbation. If you have your packs it just saves time in getting an appointment for GP and prescription. ( and nipping things in the bud ) Hope this helps.

PS... just ask your GP he/she should be happy to write a prescription for this

Quite simply, many people are issued with emergency supplies of antibiotics and steroids or whatever by their GP so that is they start with a chest infection they can take those instead of struggling to make an appointment and get to the surgery.

If someone, like myself, has regularly repeated excacerbations then the GP may set this up. By the time a prescription can be issued and collected some people would be too bad to go get the required medication.

I always have a spare lot of antibiotics and steroids indoors. I have a repeat prescription so when I use one I always go and get another one in case I need them. It saves my doctor time by me not having to make an appointment each time.

If you have my kind of luck then having your emergency pack will be very important. Most of my many lung infections have rared thier ugly heads on a Friday night leaving help over the phone on the NHS helpline or A&E. Your just not supposed to fall ill on a weekend as its very inconvenient for all concerned!!

I agree dall05, sneaky little beggars seem much more active at weekends.

I thought it was just me that experienced this. It is a comfort to know that this is quite normal. I think it must be a special strain of bugs that only wake up at weekends or nighttime. 3am or thereabouts is also a bad time for me. Polly 63

copd rescue packs are quite simply not just a god send as they help you manage your exaccabations(flare-ups) when they occur without having to wait to see a doctor and most of the time will help us who have copd to stay out of hospital but they also can help us gain some control over our emotional and mental state of mind that we are going through when dealing with copd anyway. Just buy simply knowing that they are at hand when needed. I am myself now again using my rescue pack due to flare-up which is my 4th one now since November last year and i count myself lucky that by having them, so far I have avoided being hospitalized. I hope you will speak to your doctor about these rescue packs as soon as you possible can.
