A while ago I asked the site team about Smilies, they said they were going to incorporate them in the system here, but didn't say when.

I wish they would include emoticons. Sometimes things are said in jest and can be taken in a way they were not meant as there is no body language. A smile or a wink emoticon shows it is just banter.

I use a lot of different sites and some have icons you can use at the side of a message to show your intention, it can be a ? or a ! or a smiling face, a wink or a frown, this then applies to the entire message you leave so everyone knows how you meant it to be taken.

I often add a smilie to make it clear I am saying something intended to be light-hearted.
