Hi I have a sliding hiatal hernia which causes reflux and I believe this reflux can affect your breathing. I have the head of my bed raised and take lansaprozole to try to keep it at bay, this does not always work so when having bad reflux I have peppermint drops in hot water.

They said mine is only small so to be treated with medication. It might be small but it can cause lots of sleepless nights.

Does the peppermint help polly? I ask because I've often seen peppermint listed as a reflux trigger. Reflux can definitely affect your breathing, apparently about 10% of asthma diagnoses are due to reflux, not asthma.

I have much the same as you; use a wedge pillow and lansoprozole which mostly works. I also have Barretts which worries me more as you can't tell when it will progress to cancer. I have regular endoscopies. In some ways i find reflux more disruptive than copd, strange as that might sound :)

I have a HH and bronchiectasis. Recently

GP changed my med which resulted in a lot of acid so back to omeprazole. I

know there is a connection between HH and lungs but not sure what. It could be an idea to contact BLF to find out. I wanted surgery but think they considered me too old! Love Annie80 xx

That's interesting .

I have asthma plus developed a component of COPD. I had surgery (nissen fundoplication) 6 yrs. ago for a huge hiatal hernia, at the age of 72. Doctor said my stomach was up in my chest compressing my lungs. I'm sure this affects breathing, as does acid from reflux. Sad to say, though, that the surgery wasn't totally successful. They did a "loose" wrap (180 deg.) so that I would be able to belch, pass gas and vomit. So I still get some reflux and take a low dose, 20 mg. of omeprazole in morning and 150 mg. Zantac at bedtime. I get periods of annoying, hacking dry coughs and stuffy nose. It is summer and very humid in North Carolina and I'm having a problem breathing and the dry cough kept me up half the nite. Any comments
