I have a pulled muscle! The doctor didn't laugh when I said how come? you have to have muscles to pull them :( (Why do some people become doctors I think instead of reams of A levels and degrees a sense of humour should be a qualification).

Anyway he told me to take Ibuprofen and when I just gently said is there anything different I could take as I cannot take them he turned and said to me well why ask then if you already know what you are doing. WELL you can imagine I was just on the point of loosing it when in walked my daughters next door neighbour and said Hello Janet what are we doing for you today I have never ever in my long life seen such a change in attitude from a doctor the young man was positively drooling (yuk) no she wasn't a buxom blonde she is a Chief Consultant at the hospital his whole demeanor changed in an instant. I am sorry to say I felt very smug when the young doctor blushed. Did I tell her I had been treated badly NO I didn't but when she had gone I did tell the young man his attitude stunk and that he needed to up his game if he ever wanted to get to the same position. I just hope that young man has learnt something today I have - a pulled muscle bloody hurts LOL

Jandan, I am so impressed with you.

About 5 years ago, my older sister who lives on her own in Wales, was rushed into hospital critically ill. I went staright down there as her next of kin. My sister was pretty much out of it on Morphine, so the doctor asked me some questions about her.

Although single, he insisted on referring to her as Mrs. ..... He asked me if she was normally able to manage to look after herself and get her shopping. Now my sister might have white hair, but she is anything but helpless.

I told him that I was going to explain something to him for his own good. It went like this " Unless you want a piece of her mind when she wakes up, do not call her Mrs. Call her by her title, which is either Professor or Doctor. Not only can she manage to get out and about to shop, she manages to go on worldwide lecture tours. Please do not patronise her, as she is actually the person who wrote the strategy for older people in Wales. I am quite sure you don't want her reporting her treatment at this hospital back to the Welsh Assembly."

His attitude changed dramatically and he went to see her about 3 times a day whilst she was in.

All completely true. In case you wonder, she recovered and is 70 this year, and still working and travelling all over the world!

Well jandan thats good news in a way but still a painful condition to be dealt with. Good on you to reprimand a doctor many people won't but DRs like us are only human with different temprements.

When I was in hospital a few years ago for a small op, the young doctor checked all the usual details and then asked me to sign the consent form by saying "Are you ready to sign your life away?" When I said that was rather an unfortunate turn of phrase in the circumstances it took her a couple of seconds to realise what she'd said, then looked a bit shocked. Hopefully she thinks twice now as some patients might not find it as amusing as I did! Glad it's nothing serious Jandan.

Well said.

Sounds like a pulled (existing) intercostal muscle - those between your ribs - and you are right, they do hurt like hell. Happens either through coughing, sneezing, turning awkwardly or just because.

Hope it goes soon.

I was luckier than you, same pulled muscle but a brilliant Doctor who sat and listened, asked if I could take Ibuprofen then explained in simple English what was wrong and why. I left the surgery feeling better mentally, instead of feeling that I had just wasted his valuable time as seems the case with some GPs. My muscle is improving, it's the unexpected cough that catches me out. Hope you feel better soon

I wish I had had the luck of having your neighbour walk in on my daughters appointment at Urology today, that guy needed taking down a peg or two I can tell you. But you should not be sorry for feeling smug, you obvioulsy had a little angel on your shoulder today. I am so glad that you do not have a hernia as having one myself I know just how painful they can be. But a pulled muscle is no joke at all. I hope it gets better soon, and good on you for telling him whats waht xxxxx
