Puff often has nosebleeds, but yesterday he had one so bad that his doctor sent him to hospital.

He was ok in the end, it just looked rather dramatic!!!!

But does anyone else suffer? any advice about it?

I get them, I think it is a side effect of long-term oxygen use. They are not severe though. Hope Puff is better soon. x

Its a problem with our medication I think (the skin thinning side) I used to get them badly but now use Sterimar nasal spray to help clear the nose when blocked (can get this in chemists) and naseptin cream (prescribed by doc) when bleeds start and to prevent infection. Also if the inside of the nose gets raw aloe vera gel.

NOTE. I don't use oxygen and I am not sure if any of these mentioned are suitable for people who are using oxygen or if suitable for any one else. These are the options that were available to me through referral to ENT specialist.

Quarterization can work for some people, but not all..

In all cases a referral to the ENT guy for professional and tailored to suit treatment and procedure. (GP referral)

Good luck.

Must be so hard to get oxygen when your nose is blocked with dry blood that is so worrying for both of you good luck finding a solution for the problem soon.

The hospital must have a lot of this happening with those on oxygen and steroids so it must be treatable

Puff is due to see his respiratory consultant next month so I will note it to ask him about it if there is any way of preventing it or managing .it better.

Time to hang up the boxing gloves ?

I was prescribed Aspirin 75mg daily to stop my blood from clotting, which obviously thins it and keeps it runny. I stopped taking it as every little cut I got took ages to stop bleeding.

richard gets a lot of blocked noses with blood, the nurse got him a humidifier for his 02 to help and it has a little. he has been taking aspirin since he had a stroke 21 years ago but i dont think it makes any difference, and his skin is so thin if he as much as pulls his socks off roughly the skin comes off too.

I was getting mine before the oxygen I expect because of the aspirin thinning the blood. Normally it stops very quick ( the same when I cut myself it heals normally ) but I think carrying the shopping in and over doing it a bit caused my blood pressure to go up. It only happens in the left nostril so they reckon there is a weak point there. It's more annoying than anything else. The blood drips everywhere !!

I see.So in future, this will be your excuse for not carrying in the shopping? :)

Thanks for the answers, all very interesting, I should have said, the casualty doctor gave us the advice to sit still pinching the nose for 20 minutes, with a peg if necessary, no need to bend over or hold the head back, if it is still bleeding after that, puff needs to see a doctor. As it had stopped by the time we got to hospital yesterday, no treatment was needed but the doctor said there were various things they could do while it was still bleeding if needed in future.
