Anyone able to offer advice re buying a portable motability scooter (larger lady) to fit in a Ford Focus boot?

I have just returned from a few days with the family at Centre parcs and hired a scooter - gave me so much more freedom to join in - thinking now is the time to 'give in' and get one for home and visits to family.

Shopmobility was the place to try out scooters and find what expert advice recommended all a little different in what we want from these things.

Whatever one you decide on four wheels, ie 2 in the front as well as the back, are by far the most stable

Thanks. Yes, the one I hired at cetre parc had 4 wheels and I felt more comfortable than I would have done with three. Obviously theirs was more robust than I would buy - meant for rougher terrain than I would expect to experience and I want to be able to transport it in the car.

Three wheels are better in shops whilst being less suitable on rougher terrain that you do not intend tackling, they are also lighter due to having less wheels a point not lost on those lifting these things into cars.

I am not much of a shopper but perhaps might want to go round IKEA or similar. However I do want to be able to go to meet my grandchildren from school, go around the local country parks on paved paths - not thinking of rough terrain. Does anyone have any experience to suggest that some makes are more reliable than others?

I have used a scooter for five years now. Totally dependant on it for the last two years to get out and about. Mine has four wheels it is a Paris Shopper. It cost around £1000 without VAT. It has adjustable seat and adjustable arm rests, the later I find quite important. It breaks up into four pieces for transporting in the car. We used to have a Skoda estate so classed as a small car and it went in the boot OK. We changed our car in the summer and had a hoist installed for around £500. We now get the scooter into the car whole no breaking it down and no heavy lifting. Batteries are quite heavy so one thing to look for is the type that come in two smaller batteries. Remeber you still have to carry the batteries to a power sorce for charging. I don't have any problems with shopping food or pleasure using my scooter and restaurants accommodate me entering and then parking it in their foyer area. Hope this info is helpful.

Thank you very much for this info Irene. The Paris Shopper is one I had identified as having some of the things I am looking for ( looking on the Lloyds Pharmacy site. ) I think I need to go to a motorbility centre so I can try some out. I am tall and have quite long legs so leg room will be important as well as size and weight the scooter folds down to.

I think trying some out is a very good idea. You could also try the shopmobility ones too. I know they are too big to be classed as portable but you could note the features that you like. I'm not long legged so can't say about the Paris Shoper for that. I do know that it takes people up to 20 Stone. Good luck.
