My thinking was if the lungs are not supplying enough oxygen does muscle work as it should or is that a reason for cramp that happens with my legs a lot when I have struggled. Thinking more about exercising smart than quantity when energy is not always there to do what is needed for muscle growing.

When a muscle is exercied and fit it uses far less oxygen - leaving more for other things. The cramps in your legs may be from wasted muscle or from some other cause, or a side effect of some medication you are taking. What is important is to exercise all muscles - particularly the upper chest ones as these are your breathing muscles. Get into Pulminary Rehab if possible, if not - join you local authority gym and ask them to devise an exercise routine for you with your COPD. There should be a trainer there that is experienced in this. You may be able to get a referral from your GP. It really works - honest - and it does not take too long to notice the benefits either.

Muscle Wasting in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Although am not a doctor, for me personally i and others around me have noticed i have got leaner, and some say more muscley looking..I was a bit of a bloater 3 years ago, over 14st at 5ft7..Now i am 11.5st which goes up and down..I do weights and treks and bike rides..My energy goes up and down most days too..I think it all depends on what you do or dont do to whether you lose muscle size..If your lifting medium to heavy weights with a good nutrional diet plan you would expect to see some muscle mass appear compared to if you went jogging every day as thats just cardio work..Like somebody said already, use it or lose it..
