Hi Andy

Take a look at this link for Royal Brompton - it may help

rbht.nhs.uk/copd/

To the right hand side of the Chest Physicians are details of the "COPD research" - click on this wording and there is an interesting download. Could be useful if you live near the Hospital.

Andy, if you would like to go and see a certain specialist you have a right to ask your GP for a referral. As they said no, ask what their specialty is. If they specialise in lung diseases and your condition specifically then I'd say stay with them which maybe why they said what they did. If they don't then give your reasons for wanting a referral and speak to your practice manager if you get no satisfaction.

It is good to speak up for what you want and believe in, it is your body and life at the end of the day and you should expect the best and get the best. Far too many of us don't get the best treatment and except it as we don't like to make a fuss.

I didn't understand this attitude at first when I had the same kind of answer at hospital. If you have Emphysema etc. then your GP is your Primary Health Carer who will manage your condition apart from say, 6 monthly visits to the specialist Respiratory Team at hospital. Emphysema travels a fairly predictable path and there are only so many ways of managing it with a limited range of drugs etc. If you have health concerns about your condition that you feel are not being addressed, see your GP in the first instance. The rest, as they say, is up to us.

Not sure what your condition is but If it is bronchiectasis I would say it is essential that you are reviewed and under the care of a respiratory consultant who has a special interest in cystic fibrosis/non cf bronchiectasis.
