I always like to test mine against the doctors or hospital ones so that I know it is working and the doctors are happy with the reading that is taken for me.

happy to share experiences with such charming people

I am considering buying one of these for the gym. I don't want to exercise whilst my O2 levels are too low. It woudl be great if you coudl keep us updated as to how well it works.

I recently bought one from Amazon. At first I was concerned it was reading low, I found that it needs to be allowed to settle as the reading may fluctuate a bit. For me, using it sitting up is best, slouched in my armchair gave low readings (I know, not really logical). A consultant said he reckoned it was reading 2% under when I was hospitalised with pneumonia but that's near enough I think and it compares well with the 'official' ones since. Good little gadgets, very useful.

Your sats will drop moving around. Mine does. it will vary from day to day as well. Great little gadgets to give you an idea how you are doing.

My consultant told me that a reading between 88-92 is acceptable for me, but since I started on oxygen in February I regularly obtain readings of 95/96 when I'm resting :) If I take any exercise it doesn't go down below 92.

well i put my oxygen on,and now it is staying at 94/95 ,so i guess the moving around without is causing the drop,as i've only ever had it done at the copd clinic and hospital,thank-you

Hi Poeticlady,

I purchased an oximeter from Amazon a couple of weeks ago after being sent a link on this site , brilliant . I can now keep a better check on my sats and now know that when i feel sob i am truly sob at 70 to 80% , i just put up with it before as i didn't know how low i was getting , now i stop and rest till they are back up again . My sats are usually about 95% at rest but if i talk , eat , laugh or cough it goes down to 86% ( this also happened in hospital ) . I put the rubbish out the other day and it dropped to 55% , i told my resp nurse and she said that readings are unreliable under 70% but that 70% was too low anyway , i also walked back from the bottom of the garden a few days ago and sats went down to 76% . It is good to know what makes you sob so you can alter your lifestyle . I am so pleased to have mine and will be eternally thankful to the person that sent me the link xxxx Dinny xxxx

What is an oximeter. My lungs are obviously not as bad as most people here.I am totally ignorant about these machines and what they are used for.

An oximeter is the thing they clip on your finger at the hospital which shows your blood oxygen saturation and heartbeat in lights. They can be bought from Amazon.co.uk for about £20 and are very useful to keep an eye on how you are doing day to day.
