No experience with codeine and coughing sorry, generally not recommended to taked analgesics with alcohol see information leaflet that came with the codeine, or check info below:

Codeine, dihydrocodeine and tramadol

Codeine, dihydrocodeine and tramadol are types of opioid (a stronger type of painkiller). They are usually only available on prescription, although some lower-dose medicines may be available from pharmacies. They are often combined with paracetamol.

Taking opioid painkillers can cause drowsiness and hypotension (low blood pressure), and drinking alcohol while taking them will increase these effects. If you're affected, do not drink any alcohol while taking opioid painkillers.

Important information about codeine

Codeine may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Never share codeine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.

Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death can occur when alcohol is combined with a narcotic pain medicine. Check your food and medicine labels to be sure these products do not contain alcohol.

Never take codeine in larger amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

Codeine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Do not stop using codeine suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when you stop using codeine

Amagran, my dad has been taking codeine linctus for few months now to help with the pain he has when he coughs. He says it is a great help. I posted it on here ages ago, you must have missed it hun.

He has the mucodyne syrup instead of the tablets too to help him bring up the mucus.

Dad has IPF same as your hubby and it will help him. Honest.

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and may help with pain too.

hi Amagran

I have IPF and PH and my doctor prescribed me co-codamol over a month ago which is 500mg paracetamol and 30mg codeine which is a cough suppressant and has helped me greatly with controlling my coughing and easing the subsequent pain in my back and chest. I do take quite a high dose - 8 tablets a day and i avoid alcohol as a result, everyone is different and as i am end stage in my disease i think thats the only reason i was prescribed to take this dosage.

I also take ACC which has many branding variants ( some know this drug as NAC) which is used to target the mucus on the chest to thin it down to make it easier to cough and clear from the lungs and this had an immediate effect after the first day of taking,I had a couple of rough starts to the day but after that i have found it much easier to clear my chest in the morning (when it is the worst)

hope this helps

Tony

Hi Tony, how you doing?

It's great knowing that your medication is helping you. Is there any other treatment plan in the pipeline?

Fingers crossed for my dads appointment in a couple of weeks. We will find out if the steroids have stalled the progression or not.

Take care x
