Would really like to see apoll on ESA , same as the DLA one ( But you would need to define it via England , Scotland and Wales)

Hi David

Thanks for the suggestion.

I do plan to change the poll soon - what I'm trying to set up is a programme of polls that cover a variety of topics and perhaps alternating between types of subjects.

The art is trying to keep it simple and aiming to produce date that shows us something. For example the current poll has thrown up some interesting results - including a high proportion of people not realising that breathlessness could enable them to claim DLA. As an organisation that covers 4 separate countries it is always interesting for us to see differences in the nations - for example of those people who diddn't think they could claim DLA due to breathlessness, what proportion come form Wales etc. If low it Wales it may then lead BLF Wales to want to do some sort of awareness campaign etc.

Thanks for the suggestion - it's on the list.

So it doesn't pay to exercise in that case :( I don't get much SOB these days as I exercise hard. With my FEV1 at 29% does this mean for example that I might loose out because I try harder than say someone at 49% who lazes around on their bottom all day and so gets severe SOB? That's crazy. Any COPD specialist will tell you that SOB has little to do with severity of disease and everything to do with de-conditioning. I guess the advice to anyone worrying about losing or not qualifying for DLA then would have to be sit on your bottom at the computer, relax, don't walk too much, use a car, mobility scooter, wheelchair etc.

OK so I may be taking it a bit far there, but crikey - that is a real slap in the face for those who make the effort! No wonder folks like derrylynne don't have an easy time of getting even a blue badge! Does this mean benefits do 'keep us sick' ? Never would have thought it before but it does look that way. It's a day off from the treadmill for me today then -:)

My concern about the poll results are that there are a number of people who have indicated that they were not aware that "breathlessness" was a symptom that may qualify them to claim DLA. Yes there are varying levels of breathlessness - doesn't mean that everyone will get DLA - but if someone is not claiming when perhaps they could then to me that is an issue.

There are many people who do "make the effort" yet still qualify for DLA - getting the DLA enables them to get out and about more.

Perhaps I've missed the point of your post - my apologies if I have.

Yes Stitch, point taken re work not leaving time or energy for exercise. I am not sure though that my exercising has delayed progression - fev1 29% is pretty low, though it has improved my sob enormously. I still tire easily though and still need oxygen 24/7. I don't think they can take my DLA away from me while I am on oxygen, but I can't help thinking how ironic and cruel it would be for anyone who has worked so hard to find they have 'un-qualified' because they no longer have such serious sob.
