any tips on improving appearance of thin skin?

My skin on hands and arms suddenly became like a snake's dead skin a few months ago....thinned by steroids I guess ... it's a minor problem given the rest of stuff with copd. Even so, if anyone has any idea on improving this, it would be nice :)

thanks, Val ... will do that.

Hi Stitch, yes, it will be the steroid tablets I have taken at worst times of exacerbation methinks... the lesser of 2 evils I guess ! cardis will be worn in summer then :( Thanks for answer

Another time when docs haven't shared their knowledge !!!

It's scary when bruises and bleeding happens until you know what it is, eh - I only found out from a friend whose husband has similar skin now , made me feel lots better not being scared but annoyed like you that docs didn't warn or explain. Maybe we on this blog should start a petition as lack of knowledge / public awareness of COPD seems such a huge problem with many negative effects

see this avaaz.org/en/petition/start...

what do you think ?

Hi

Bruising of the skin and thinning of the skin are two of the many side effects, listed in the British national Formulary, of oral steroids e.g. prednisalone.

Skin thinning and brusing, according to the same source, have also been reported in the use of inhaled steroids - but the levels of steroids in inhalers is much lower than in oral(tablet) form.

I have a feeling this discussion is going to run and run and run......

Thanks

Mark

Yes - I remember that post well.

I think the difference here is that the side effects of tablet steroids are quite well documented due to the higher doses.

Whereas with inhaled steroids they are "reported" as happening - implying not as common - therefore the reference in the BNF is quite small.

Up to reading this thought it was just age but that was the same as getting out of breath did not think COPD then either

I have thining of the skin. I get bruising & pupura on the forearms this is caused by long term steroids. I am on Seratide 500 the paitent leaflet says Bruising is a Common side effect ( 1 in 100 ).

Most paitent information leaflets for inhaled steroids will contain this information. It is important that you read the information leaflets for your medication

This was discussed at length on the old BFL forum & there were several members who had bruising due to either oral tablet steroids or inhaled steroids, or a combination of both.

I tend to use E45 wash & moisture lotion to prevent the skin becoming dry. I also use Arnica cream on bruises

Best wishes

Jo :-)

thanks for answers - they prompted me to put vaseline on one arm and hand last night - a small but visible difference this morning. I must moisturise inside (water) and out more often now :)

:) thanks
