Good job you don't live up north. We've had mostly grey skies for months. Does nothing to lift the spirits. When I see your photos showing blue skies I think "she's getting more than her fair share" πŸ˜‰

Well my fair share hmm I guess so πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ ....I was raised in the North the far North of Glasgow so adore blue skies and sunshine nowadays πŸ’™

Oh he's gorgeous and I love the reflection. It is definitely a mandarin. When I was a child a solitary male came to live with all the mallards on the local lake. I wondered why he never wandered off in search of a mate, but he looked very exotic in suburban North London. xxx

Blackbird9 profile image
Blackbird9 in reply to Alberta56

Is it not if their mate passes they don't ever take another one and live solitary life's...don't quote me on that but yes they are very exotic πŸ§‘πŸ’š

Alberta56 profile image
Alberta56 in reply to Blackbird9

Swans certainly can remain single. We had one in a local park whose mate was killed. He went bananas when the parkies introduced a nice young female on to his pond and just wouldn't accept her. I don't know if ducks are so loyal, but that might explain why our mandarin remained a bachelor.

Just googled Mandarin ducks will only ever have one partner πŸ₯Ί

Hi BB, seeing this photo of a Mandarin duck caught my interest. It really is a beautiful, flamboyant looking bird so I decided to do a little research. Its apparently a descendent of the original Mandarin duck which was imported to the UK from Asia in the 1920s. Like a lot of wealthy people through the ages they wanted exotic looking birds and animals to show of their wealth. Although I have never been lucky enough to see one here in Wales these birds are now quite rare in the countries of their origin. Thanks for another interesting photo.Xxx

Hey Bb9, thanks for this beautiful photo.Mandarin ducks: the ultimate love symbol!

The Chinese name for Mandarin duck is Yuanyang, where yuan refers to the beautifully plumed male bird and yang the plainer female one. For married couples having some β€œtough time” with your life partner, keeping a pair of Mandarin Ducks will help resolve all issues.πŸ€ͺ

You have given me an idea!Since my family seem to think I am somewhat eccentric think I shall do just that and wear clashing colours and a bright eyecatching in your face hat!

Just for the fun of it -except I don't go out often so the shock factor will be limited to the neighbours dog......

Yes, often the old comfy clothes are the best especially if good memories accompany them! I had a pair of sneakers with all those colors on them when I was 10yr. old. The other kids made fun of my shoes, but I adored them and was very reluctant to let them go when I'd outgrown them. Fancy feet, I guess!

Good picture of Mandarin Duck thanks. When our on motorbikes coming from Peak District etc, would have rest at benches alone road at JCB Rocester looking out over the lakes with, we were told, 78 different bird species including mandarin ducks and black swans. Since my husband died, it’s nice to go there, take picnic, watch birds, water fountains. Jean xx
