Any advice on using a rollator to carry oxygen please?

My husband has IPF, and has just been given ambulatory oxygen, but isn't stable or strong enough to use the backpack. We were thinking about getting a lightweight three wheeled rollator and using the shopping bag to carry the cylinder. The supplier has been unable to advise us. I'm new here, and will be grateful for your thoughts.

I got this rollator from Amazon” Trustcare Let's Fly Out Rollator, Red” Wasn’t cheapest but am delighted with it and is very stable. Some of the 3 wheeled ones are not so stable and if there are issues with stability anyway.

I also purchased a bag from the company that attaches to the rollator which should carry the cylinder.

Thank you Bevvy. I'll look at that type of rollator, and take your point about stability. He's lost so much muscle mass we thought a lightweight one might be easier to manoeuvre, but you obviously manage yours OK.

Even with 4 wheels mine is extremely light which means not too heavy to push or 2 heavy to put in car.The other thing I like about it is that there are no untidy break cables that can catch on things. They are neatly inside the frame.

I bought a three wheel rollator this summer and found that although my ambulatory cylinder is taller than the bag it sits in quite safely. It was a tremendous help to me for getting out for a walk as I too found the bag too heavy to carry. I found holding onto something while walking very helpful too.

I bought mine from the Complete Care Shop on line. They have a selection at very reasonable prices.

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at the range available from Complete Care. My concern was that the bag may not be strong enough for the cylinder, as it's detachable with popper fastenings and no weight limit suggested. Encouraging your cylinder hasn't landed on the pavement yet! Which rollator did you purchase?

I have had three four wheeled rollators over the years all with a bag n which I have managed to slip my oxygen cylinder into. Obviously not made for this as meant for a few items of shopping and although not that deep I have always found they have taken the cylinder without any problems at all. I have never had the fastenings give way under the weight nor the oxygen bottle tip out so you should be fine. Best wishes Ruth

Hi, I bought the NRS 3 Wheel Rollator. The bag is quite strong and using it to hold the oxygen cylinder hasn't been a problem so far.

Hi I'm on ambligatury oxygen and I use a 4 wheeler rollator to carry my oxygen every where we go plus its more stable and you can get out of the house and enjoy yourself Been doing it for the last 8 years

That is what I use. It’s an ideal way of carrying it, there is no way I could carry that around with me without it. Xxx

Hi, I use a three wheeled rollator and my cylinders fit ok in the bag attached to it. Mine wasn't particularly expensive and does just fine.

Hi Spherical, I weigh next to nothing and the 2 litre oxygen cylinder is far too heavy for me to carry. I even struggle with the i-litre paediactric.. I bought a GIMI 2-wheeled shopping trolley which I use all the time. Obviously it has no seat so if you do need to rest from time to time when you're out and about, then a rollator would be better. The physio dept of your local hospital may well provide you with one free of charge. Blessings, Christina

I bought a Prestige shopper/walker, 4 wheels with a seat and my son attached two hooks to the handle that I use to hang my oxygen bag. It folds flat when not in use and is very steady.

I have a 4 wheeled rollator I’m a bit naughty and put the oxygen cylinder in its bag and then put it over the handles. I’m not sure it’s the safest way to do it but suits me, I keep the rollator bag free for shopping. I thought for a long time before I got my rollator but it has given me back some freedom even if only to get to local shops
