Have Bronchiectasis.. been fine for 10 years with the occasional exacerbation clearing with amoxicillin. October came down with nasty pseudomonas infection and given ciprofloxacin..
Thought it had cleared up but then last week coughing up bits of phlegm sent it off and it’s grown pseudomonas staphylococcus and Candida..😱 all so depressing for me as normally quite active healthy person. Contracted bronch nurses and reply from bronch consultant is .. as I’m not feeling ill with it.. bit tired/ headachy.. see how it goes before starting back on cipro . Happy to give it a week but Basically wondering what I can do naturally (doing AABT) to avoid going back on cipro/ help get over this awful period.. any advice .. eating /certain exercises??.. hope🙄

How frustrating. I have had bronchi for years and dread picking up something nasty. I’m no expert but i’d get the antibiotics down me. You don’t want to give the bugs any chance to do more damage. I take high dose vit c and do my breathing exercises regularly when I’m not well. Sorry I can’t be more help, it’s such a frustrating thing to have when it flares up
Hi, sorry to hear this, I have to say I'm quite surprised they haven't given you antibiotics for the pseudonyms staphylococcus. I wish I was more knowledgeable to offer anything positive to help hopefully the more bronch savvy members will be along shortly. For the candida, sugar feeds it so I would cut out all sugar for three months if you can bear it. Also eat plenty of live yogurt and take some high billions (20 billion at least) daily to eradicate it.
Hi Phil. I really feel for you. Psuedomonas is known as a highly infectious bacterium that has high tolerance and resistance to antibiotics. The only advice I can offer is to keep active and try to keep your mental attitude positive. Get regular excercise no matter how little this might be. If there is something you enjoy , do it more often. Follow the advice of your doctor and respiratory team. Get involved with any group......Church, synagogue, temple, mosque, or atheist society. This all sounds very lame but just keep breathing and fighting
Do you mean Staphylococccus Aureus, as I had that bug, which oral AB's would not shift, and I had it from end of March to middle of November 2014. Only got rid of with a intravenous AB course. A CT scan at the time showed I had now got Bi-Basal Bronchiectasis, and I reckon it was that 7 1/2 month run with SA damaged my lungs, leaving me with Bronchiectasis.So, suggest to your GP that you need Intravenous AB I would say.
S. Aureus is the SA bit of MRSA which affects wounds. But who knows what it can do in your lungs.
Hi there Phil, Pseudomonas can colonise and be difficult to get rid of. I have had these for 15 years and yes they come and go. When hospitalised firstly they have given me Tazocine IV's for 10 days then I have been put on the oral antibiotic Cipro 750 mg for 10 days. The only thing I also take daily to combat these is an inhaled antibiotic which is taken through my nebuliser called Colistimethate which you mix with saline. If you need anything else just ask.
I would suggest talking to a different doctor or nurse as the pseudomonas is not going away with out an antibiotic. Probably a different kind. You got the Candidas because the antibiotic killed your good bacteria and it was able to grow. It needs to be treated too. Please call back and insist to be seen as neither illnesses but just get worse. Hope you feel better soon!
Thanks everyone for your adviceThink the consultant is holding back on abx as I’m pretty ok at the moment, not bringing any sputum up / not breathless and still active/ able to exercise. But have ordered the cipro for my rescue pack.. can contact the respiratory team easily.. they seem to be good🤞

Was going to stay off sugar for a month because of the Candida.. that’s going to be hard!.. am also trying all sorts of other remedies.. probiotics/ sauerkraut/ Vit C.
Anyone heard of Mullein Leaf drops ???.. good for lung function apparently.
I've had same bug coming and going for 15yrs.Cipro 750mg X 2 daily for 10- 14 days usually brings it back under control again.
I find treating it as to how I'm feeling and what sputum I'm producing is the best way to go.
If another culture is clear, it doesn't naturally follow on that it's gone for good, it may return periodically, its a pain but best to keep on top of it... keep active and hopefully it will all quieten down....
If you start to feel unwell or start producing nasty amount of sputum of a green colour don't hesitate about taking another course of Cipro.
Thanks.. so good to hear from people that have it & feel in control of their symptomsI’m feeling OK , occasional bit sputum when doing AABT 3 x daily , staying active getting out and about.. but not my usual dynamic self.. hard to know how much is psychological…. or whether it’s due to the bugs…. Bit of a learning curve for me at the moment..
You are much like me and your problems are much the same as mine. I was put onAzithromycin 250mg tablets
12 tablet - Take one tablet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. I have ben on this for 2 years and not had any major issues. I have regular blood tests to ensure there is no problems long term with other organs. The only thing I had to change was my statins as the ones I had were not compatible with the antibiotic. Thanks for your info.. can I ask why Azithromycin and not ciprofloxacin..? I am feeling ok / no symptoms but having been told I’ve grown these 3 bugs just wonder if they are likely to kick off at any time.. & at the same time want to hold off taking antibiotics for a long as possible ..
May I ask which statin you have been prescribed? I am waiting to hear back from my GP who wants to put me on statins but said he needed to find out which is compatible with azithromycin.Like others, I have found azithromycin to be a game changer. I have fewer flare-ups and my lungs feel better despite being colonised with Pseudomonas.
I didn't ask the question as to why he picked Azithromycin, I seem to remember that he said it was very good at preventing a build up of mucus as it helps to reduce an ideal growing medium for pseudomonas which is difficult to treat. As far as I know I haven't experienced any side affects from taking them, but I do know I have been good on them.
Hi, before they worked out I has pseudomonas infection I went through five different antibiotics, and before cipro 2 strong ones at the same time. Then sputum sample confirmed pseudomonas auruginosa and they called me and said ‘we know why you’re not getting better’. Then I went on cipro for two weeks straight. Felt pretty disgusting on those but realised I had to do it to lose the cough. Then I still had wicked wet cough and they did a bronchoscopy and observed I had vocal cord disfunction, still an issue now. But when tested my lung samples grew nothing. I don’t think there was a bacterial organism left in my body after so much antibiotics. I still have the cough though and go to a speech therapist to try and improve the VCD. Not sure if that story helps you at all but hope so.
My wife has bronch and has taken antibio 3x per weeke for last 4 years. But in addition has physiotheray 2/3 x per week to help clear base of lungs. We live in france where physio is readily available but do ask your doctor if it is possible.
Hello phill Sorry for the delay in getting back to you how are you doing hope well yeah I have been unwell myself and can say had chest infection may be pseudomnas myself I tried not to use ciprofloxacin and high dose of perdiesoline but I had to when nothing was working I took 40ml of perdiesoline and 750mg twice a day ciprofloxacin for 14 day's I feel much better now I felt it working on 10th day but for some people even 7-10 day's insnt enough can take 3-4 week's depending on each body and health how bad infection is I'll say ask your consultant and it might you need iv or longer course only you know your body and know if it's working or not I hope this helps wish you good luck phill
