So now l am unreasonable !!

Have accepted that l am in for a long stretch have resolved to do what l can when l get out to make it better next time. Consultant asked what would would make it easier. So explained l need to do chest clearance at least twice daily it takes me about an hour. I always do it in bathroom at home so there are no leaves when l am really coughing. Impossible to do it here as in a ward of 5 ladies all ambulant and needing bathroom. Have tried several times only to be interrupted halfway through. So asked if there was another bathroom l could use or better still be put in one of the 5 single rooms so that l could do it properly and my pulmonary exercises. Consultant actually agreed nearly fell over. However person who allocates beds thinks l am being unreasonable and should just make the best of a bad situation. Now l feel that l am being selfish and have givecup on chest clearance altogether as l can't cope with the stress of it. I know this will have very detrimental effects on me but l am finished fighting now sorry for sounding like a wuss

Surely if the consultant agrees it supports your argument, and the person allocating beds should heed that. I’m so sorry to know you’re having such an awful time there. I don’t think I could bear it. Sending you lots of sheepy hugs 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑

Just an idea, is it possible for you, in a quiet moment with no staff around, to get together and ask the other 5 "inmates" to start complaining that your are disturbing them too much 'with all the disgusting coughing'. That may just do the trick into getting your move.

I like the way you think x

So do I..lol...however why should you resort to such measures. Have a word with your nurse there may be alternative rooms that you could use.

Oh how this resonates! These idiots have no idea that we need our privacy and time to do a procedure that will save our lives! It is part of your condition. You are ill not unreasonable. Oh my stars. I could stick pins in my eyes. You cannot give up on lung clearance. If you do, any IV treatment that you are having will be pointless. Do what I did. Get them to bring you those cardboard dishes. Close the curtains around the bed and go ahead with your clearance. If the other patients don’t like it then tough! This is part of your necessary daily health management. and you never know, their complaints may lead to the idiots finding you somewhere for you to do it in private.

Oh boy do we have to develop the hide of a rhinocerous!

If they accuse you of being unreasonable again show the ignorant idiots this reply!

Thankyou so much Littlepom. Seem to have lost my mojo at the moment. Stealing my self to make a run for the lift later and escaping to coffee shop down stairs that will give me hope

in reply to Delamere

Ok so while you are on the run go to the toilet in the hospital and get rid of as much as youcan. Ignore any funny looks. If you are still getting no cooperation call your consultant’s sec THIS MORNING and explain the situation. This is not optional or dependant on the whims of nurses and others. It is life threatening. Failing that start doing it into tissues behind your curtains. Lots and lots of tissues and stuff them all into a carrier bag from the hospital shop.

You HAVE to put your health first.x

Good plan there is a toilet right next door to the lift. As soon as they get this antibiotic through l am off. Well l will wait for them to go for their break apparently if you are on 24/7 oxygen you need to be escorted if you leave the ward. Asked them how they thought l managed at home really

in reply to Delamere

It is truly ridiculous. I went for a trial of neb meropenem yesterday. After 31 yrs if nebulising abs it needed 3 in the room. One to ask me questions that I have been answering for 50 yrs. One frustrated physiologist to bring the drug and a doctor to make it up and supposedly show me how to do it. The doc didn't know what he was doing and the phys and I ended up telling him🤣oh boy did we all laugh. When I write the book it's going to be called - ALWAYS KNOW WHERE THE LOO IS: The story of my life.

Good luck. Every time you stand up to them think of us all behind you cheering you on. X

Oh the money and time the health service waste by not listening to the people's who actually know their disease and limitations even though we have to push them sometimes. Thankyou again for your support

High time to demand to see the hospital chief executive at your bedside and advise him/her that the bed manager is totally out of order. Yes it can be done, done it myself at 1am in a morning. Take your complaint right to the top.

Delamere in reply to Lol1944

Well done you. I am going to recharge my batteries by escaping to the shop which l am apparently supposed to be supervised at REALLY then l will try again !

in reply to Lol1944

So did I! I emailed the chief exec at 2am because the ward was freezingcold and had been for weeks. Threatened him with local press. 7am heating fixed and an electric heater put into my side room. The problem is that just as you are at your lowest youfind yoursel battling against those who have takenall control from you.

Very well done. More patients should do it if having a problem or dealing with jumped up individuals getting above their station

You have hit the nail right on the head there what l wouldn't give for a hammer right now !

Someone is being unreasonable here and it isn’t you. I don’t much like living alone but one advantage is I can let rip in the bathroom when clearing my lungs. I’ve even written poems on what joy I have in watching the result trying to avoid sliding down the porcelain, disgusting though it may be. Surely some room could be made available to you to perform a self treatment that is just as important to you as the stuff they are doing to you. Fighting rarely helps in these circumstances but perseverance usually does.😉😘

So sorry again you are having to deal with this and fight for your right to self care privately without interruption and be cared for Delamere.

I say to the person who dares to suggest you are being unreasonable (report that one) " your consultant agrees " you need to have your own room so that you can continue to manage your own condition and care without hindrance in a private space (and I wouldn't mince words)

You are not being selfish at all, you are preserving your health so that you can avoid prolonged hospital stay and complications that can result from not carrying out your routine lung clearance.

Sending you the love and courage to stay strong and strong willed in this your medical care.

Very best wishes BK

In to battle eh? 🙄 Probably get upgraded from 'unreasonable' to 'troublesome'.

Delamere in reply to

That is my ambition well actually it's impossible. Have moved up a grade as l ran away outside unsupervised. All windows closed in ward impossible to breathe so took myself outside . In the bad books now but don't care it was worth it

For a bed allocator to disregard the words of a consultant is very serious, even if the person is a troublemaker. I've had people dismissed for less. Battling isn't working. 🤷‍♂️

How unreasonable of the bed allocator, and how rotten for you. It can’t be much fun for everybody else either. I would suggest you take it up with your consultant, either when they come round or on the phone. I’ve always used the argument that the NHS is for you, not you for the NHS. Without us they wouldn’t have a job! Good luck, and I hope things are better soon x

I can imagine your consultant did nearly fall off his chair in surprise that you are so compliant with lung clearance. I know folks on here are but I have been told many are not. This bed person appears to have no idea that lung clearance is the mainstay of treatment. If you are on a respiratory ward I can’t understand why lung clearance isn’t the norm by staff and patients alike. Is there a physio who can liaise with dozy bed person.

I hope you get some joy from Chief Exec or PALS and/or con.

Xxx

Delamere profile image
Delamere in reply to cofdrop-UK

Thankyou cofdrop part of the problem is that it is not a respiratory ward but a surgical ward. My respiratory team are in a different hospital 40 miles away. Saw physio here lst day and she just checked my clearance techniques and was happy that l knew what l was doing so haven't seen her since. It's the small things l have found that defeat you. There is a lady on the ward that insists on closing all the windows as soon as they have been opened so this becomes an on going battle all day so wearing. Resorted to putting my ambulant oxygen on which thank heavens l had bought with me ! Shuffling down the corridor taking the l lift down to ground floor and using the public toilet by front door to do clearance. Sat outside front door willing myself to go back in l need to finish this course of AB but feel l am paying a heavy price

cofdrop-UK in reply to Delamere

It’s a huge problem on any other type of ward. I hope they show some sense and consideration soon. I wonder how they would feel having to do what you have to. I wonder if you can emphasise that lung clearance is integral, along with the meds for you to improve and if they cannot accommodate your needs for lung clearance, the likelyhood would be you would need treatment much sooner, which would be an unnecessary cost to the NHS. The mention of money sometimes has ears pricking up.

Right Delamere, tell the person in charge of the beds to sxx off and get those lungs cleared, no matter who is within hearing distance, your health is more important. We are right behind you and your mojo is within your reach, so grab it quickly. Keep your chin up x

You certainly aren’t being unreasonable and hope someone sees sense for you soon.

I had similar years ago and it really distressed a very poorly elderly patient in the ward, but they transferred someone who didn’t want to go in a side ward instead of me, which we all felt so inconsiderate at the time. Fortunately the elderly lady was transferred to another ward within a couple of days.

Good luck and really hope you are successful whatever route you take.
