Dry blocked nose from oxygen

24 hour oxygen is causing me to have a very blocked nose. Blowing it is very difficult as I need to remove nasal prongs and removal of oxygen causes my saturation levels to plummet to 50%, within a few seconds. Oxygen keeps levels to 86% providing I do not do anything. Walking a few metres causes them to drop to 75% which causes a degree of panic. I try to keep calm but often wake in the night totally congested.

My oxygen has increased recently because my condition deteriorating so rapidly.

I also get a very sore nose with bleeding.

Any advice would be welcome. Oxygen nurse advised KY jelly and saline drops but neither has helped.

Hi I have used oxygen 24.7 for some time now and find that KY Jelly does help me I have no idea what else to suggest you.

Hello Mary1956I had a similar problem and the first time it happened..I panicked.However my local chemist came up with this spray (I live in Spain ) called respimar decongestive I am pretty sure you can get something similar in the uk.

It works immediately.The other is respibien for when it gets very bad the ingredients are oximetonzolina hidroclouro...perhaps you could find some one to ask at your local chemist for something similar it is a cortisone based spray.I haven't had to use it yet as the respimar works fine with me.

Hi Mary 1956 , can identify with this as I am also on oxygen 24-7 with similar sats to you, I also plummet on taking the prongs out and have similar concerns regarding nose blowing. As yet have not tried KY jelly , but would be interested to hear about alternatives. Good luck . 🌷

Hi. Mary I have used Aveeno dry skin relief moisturiser for that clogged up dry nostril that is such a bind. I put it on with my fingers and use it as my face cream. You can simply leave the nasal prongs sitting on your upper lip to avoid the O2 drop One advantage is that the same cream is great for dry skin on hands or anywhere I hope that helps

I had that problem some years ago and spoke to oxygen supplier. They recommended a water-filled plastic bottle, which they supplied, between the machine and tubing. It worked perfectly. Good luck!

An alternative to KY jelly that works for me is Lubricating Jelly from a £1 shop. I can put it in my nostrils in the evening and it has released the blockage by morning Brand name is Sensual.
