Edema Swollen Feet and Ankles

Good afternoon everyone, I was recently in hospital due to a severe exacerbation of Bronchiectasis brought on by Pseudomonas, I was treated with Tazocin IVs four times daily together with 40 mg of Prednisolone. I have received this in the past and historically my feet and ankles have swollen up retaining fluid. This usually dies down when I am released from Hospital and the tapering down on my prednisolone has finished. I have noticed this time that even after 2 weeks the swelling has not fully subsided yet? Apart from continuing to elevate my feet is there anything anyone else does to ease this?

Kind regards as always.

Joe x

Feet should be higher than your heart and should be elevated as much as possible until the swelling has gone . Mum has this regularly and unless she spends 3 whole days with feet up high it doesn’t shift.

Hi Joe, glad you are out of hospital now, this heat muggy weather tends to cause my angles to swell, my doc always said it was gravitation :D that was in the days when I was on diltiazem for blood pressure.... yes I know these can cause it too.

What I do is sit with feet up as and when, sometimes if temperature cools the swelling will go down over night. If you find when temperature has cooled and the swelling isn't going down overnight chat with your doctor or respiratory nurse about this.

The other thing I do is the usual ankle rotation (clockwise then anti clockwise) also the flex and point. Do this periodically when seated or reclining.

If they are really swollen and its very hot weather, is wrap a cool pack in a flannel and place around the ankles.

I have one of those cooling towels too you can get water activated ones as well, can tie these round ankles. (may have to search sports cooling towels)

Sorry went on a bit there, but these are all the things I do or have done which have helped.

I've also used the Chillow pillow

One of the ice packs that you get in lunch boxes are really good if you get back pain too :)

Good lucki I hope something helps.

Best wishes BK

I find that people do not consider other causes, staying in hospital, most of the time in bed, for two weeks, usual for IV's, is a cause for oedema alone, add in, prednisolone, inactivity, eating too much "stodge", I always stuff myself! Then there is a possibility of completely different cause like, heart failure. Most advice has been posted already and is good, but if you still have oedema after two weeks, I think you should get your doctor's advice, preferably the doctors who looked after you in hospital, good luck, hope you recover soon.

Hi Joseph260268. My experience on prednisone

For me it wasn't a nice experience I called them devil pills.

Everyone's experience is not the same though

Are you on them or deciding to go on them? I came off mine as it made my depression worse

Then the weight I put on as well. I hope this helps.

Hello I hope you are ok? I was only on 35mg 7 months and because of having more fibrosis than inflammation it was horrible for me coming off them but did it.

What dose are you on if you don't mind me asking.

I was on 40mg for 8 days, I am tapering down currently on 15mg. Did you have oedema?

hello Joseph. I was on prednislone for a short time. I thought they made my breathing more laboured- but was put on again some time later and I definately knew they caused me to have shortness of breath, came off them slowly and felt much better but breathing did not improve. also have swollen legs and ankles but that is oedema - and all part and parcel of my general condition. I an better off than miillions so should not complain but I do. Hope all goes well with all. cheers all. spooks36,
