Being let on the loose.

I will shortly be leaving for the hospital all on my own! Walking, catching buses and then more walking, something I have not done for 18 months, an adventure. I have had my children take me before in that time. This time though it was at very short notice to arrange transport, even hospital transport. I had a phone call from the hospital yesterday afternoon to book my PET scan. She said they were very busy but could offer me an appointment at 5:25 for today. My face to face appointment with the Oncologist is a week on Friday (the 9th). Rather than go for a later date I jumped at the chance. The MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) need some time to examine the scan images otherwise my Oncologist is not going to be able to tell me anything when I see him, this has happened to me once before.

My tent and sleeping bag is packed along with various items of canned food, spoon, Swiss army knife, water bottle, Primus Stove and Tilley Lamp swinging from the bottom of my rucksack along with a box of matches wrapped in waxed cloth. Dib, dib, dib with the two fingered salute............not that two fingered salute, the Scout's one :D

That's great, get in there quick ! Have you got a good book ? I was amazed to get a CT scan booked in 3 weeks and at the Nuffield. I know they are out sourcing to get them done but was told it could be up to 2 -3 months wait. Enjoy your adventure

That was a big day out in the great outdoors, I left at 3:15 and got back home at 9:15 exactly 6 hours. Followed by a really bad night, disturbed by eye watering pains in my legs. Still I managed to get there and back more or less in one piece. Now I have to look forward to repeating that journey in 9 days time to see my Oncologist, unless I get a lift.

I was gobsmacked as the bus crawled past a pub that was packed to the hilt, with young, maskless people jumping up and down, hugging, shouting and singing in celebration of the football win. A super spreader event in the making, I do hope not.

It's strange how things that we used to do without thinking about it are now classed as an adventure! I was saying this to my daughter yesterday. I can't remember when I last drove myself anywhere or went on a bus!

In some way, after our own 'house arrest', I suppose it is analogous to prison inmates who get institutionalised and are overwhelmed and bewildered by society and freedom upon release.

Well done 2greys. That was quite an outing. 6 hours for a one way journey. No wonder your legs ached! I am so glad that you made it but that lift may be useful on the day of your results.

Good luck with those. I will keep my fingers , and anything else that will, crossed for you.

Increased fibrosis or the tumour has become active again. Hopefully it is increased fibrosis, which I can live with, if this is so then in a way that is good news as it means the radiotherapy has done it's job, even if it has destroyed a small amount of healthy lung cells next to the tumour in the process. It only takes a few missed rogue cells for the tumour to start growing again.

Can you not get a taxi. I know it’s expensive but this is something urgent.if I lived near I would take you. Do you not know anyone who can take you?

2greys profile image
2greys in reply to Mavary

I tried all the our family members both my own and Sharon's everyone was working. Plus I was in the PET/CT unit for 3 1/2 hours.

A taxi would have cost over £40, not a done thing with what is now our meagre budget. I lost all my private pension in the financial crisis of 2007-2008. I only had 12 years to start over :( In any case the exercise did me good, no pain no gain and I certainly had the pain last night in bed.

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to 2greys

I’ve had the same thing when I’ve had to go to hospital. I once booked a hospital car because they were always busy. It cost me £15 to get to the hospital. My Sons said after that they would have taken me. They are very good most of the time but they have got busy lives. That financial crisis cost us the selling of our house. The people had invested their pension. We did sell it after but for a lot less. I hope your pain is a bit easier now.

The beauty of it right now is they want you in & out , hopefully you won’t need your tent but hey ho Be Prepared dib dib x

2greys profile image
2greys in reply to Spoticus

PET scans are quite involved and lengthy procedures, starting with a comprehensive Q&A session then fitting the cannula and and administering the radioactive glucose tracer. There is then a waiting time of relaxation for an hour or more for the body to take up the tracer. Next the scan from the top of your head to your knees takes 20/30 mins. Plus there is a steady stream of patients all at different stages of the process. Then time to clean down the scanner between each patient. By the time of my appointment they were already running half an hour late. I was actually there for 3 1/2 hours. Not the case of a quick in and out.

Hi 2greys

wish you lived nearer we do, if possible help with transport for such things in our village.

Wondered if it would be possible for you to have a telephone consultation on this occasion save you the journey and get to speak to your oncologist in the comfort of your armchair.

Best wishes

The appointment is manageable and I want to see the scan images for myself, it has been two years since seeing the Oncologist now as well. He asked for the meeting/examination, so I will be going. Should it be bad news we can discuss how to proceed forwards. I also think that phone calls and bad news do not belong together, I remain calm and collected about things.
