Does anyone know if l could put in for disability allowance l have Asthma Bronchiectasis and back pain which l have suffered with Asthma ad back pain for a very long time and Bronchiectasis for over6 years l am on trimbow easibreathe and have nebulizer for my lung condition and take pain killers everyday for my back pain Would appreciate replies and any advice Many thanks

Disability Living allowance is being replaced by PIP for adults under pension age. For people over pension age the benefit you can apply for is Attendance Allowance. Your diagnosis has nothing to do with it, it's how that affects your daily living. It can be awarded for instance, if you need help with washing and dressing, toileting or preparing a meal. There is a lengthy form to fill in for applicants which is worth completing in as much detail as possible to explain the difficulties you have if you choose to apply. Citizens Advice can sometimes help with this. The BLF also have a benefits advisor if you want to telephone their helpline.

Thankyou for your reply although l do struggle a bit with my dressing due to my back and leg pain it's more about me being tired and breathless and no energy l am 73 so from your message it will be attendance allowance l am expecting a call from the Asthma nurse l will mention it to her Thank you for your quick reply

You should apply as you may well be awarded it and you certainly have nothing to loose.

Its worth aplying for if you are struggling with doing thigs. Get someone to help fill in the forms. As its often the way you word your answer that makes the differance. Never answer yes i can do that but then explane how as they never read pased the yes. So the answer is No then explane how and why. Good luck

Not quite corriena. If for example you can dress yourself then say yes. But also put on it takes you x amount of time and x amount of pain. The criteria says that you have to be able to do something in a timely and safe manner.

I have Aspergillosis and COPD and get attendance allowance as I have past retirement age, I also have a blue badge. Prior to applying for both I had just come out of hospital after 10 days with pneumonia, chronic breathlessness meant I struggled to get upstairs and ordered a stair lift. The hospital arranged for a home assessment to advise on adaptions and ideas to make life manageable. The things that really help with getting the allowance and the badge, are copies of consultants (not GP) letters describing the disease, and community provided NHS wheelchair and Walker. Make sure you tell them about your worst days and how you struggle particularly with bathing or showering and getting dressed and also making a hot meal. The forms can seem a bit daunting so seek help if you think you need it.

My daughter is a Welfare Rights officer , her advice is don't try to do this yourself!!Citizens Advice is a good place to start or your local Welfare Rights office.

I applied for pip last year ,im stage 4 severe copd. Reply i got from dwp was basically in there opion im not ill enough. Sounds like youve liturally got to be 1 step away from death before these people will do anything.Think the main problem is like most gps they really do not understand the implications of copd
