I’ve recently been diagnosed with Heart Failure and I’ve been asked to use a peak flow meter to check my lungs.
Over the last week my average is around 575 (I’m a 6ft - 68 years old- male). I think this is ok and shows my breathlessness is caused by my Heart Failure.
My question is that when I take the very first reading I can do 700 and the next couple are around 500. Is this normal. The GP also gave me Salbutamol but I haven’t used that yet?
(I already take 11 tablets a day so I’m reluctant to add more medication if it can be avoided)
Thank you, kind regards
David

Hi Dave, your peak flow is the best of three. The first one nearly always is the best. Your PF reading is good, mine is considerably lower and always has been. As long as you know what your PF should read you can monitor your lung health by keeping a diary of readings. The nurses always laugh at me as I keep a continuous reading and if my PF drops I know my asthma has flared up. I hope this helps you, Take care, Maximonkey
