Copd with asthma treatment

Hi all. I've had copd for years (fev1 43% about 3 years ago) , but my respiratory nurse thinks there's asthma involved as well. My previous GP & nurse mentioned this some years ago. I have a Fostair nexthaler, which really helps, but I take more than I should 😬. I was asked to try Incruse Elipta as well, but it did nothing . The same with Trimbo on its own. In fact, my breathing was awful & I only lasted 3 days before grabbing the Fostair. At the moment I'm taking Fostair & Seebri. The Seebri seems to help for an hour or two, then I'm sob again. I've read quite a bit here about Spiriva. Does anyone have a combination that works for them? Thanks for any thoughts.

I don't have asthma and can't really suggest any combi inhaler.

All my inhalers are separate, I find all work reasonably well for me.

Spiriva Respimat (24 hour broncodilater)

Qvar / Kelhale (preventer inhaler)

Oxis turbohaler (formeterol 12 hour)

~Ventolin as and when required (helps as top up to the other inhalers)

top 3 above, only as prescribed you can't take Spiriva more than once in 24 hours for instance.

I think if you are needing to take your inhaler/s in excess of the amount prescribed you need to discuss this with you medical advisers. Exceeding the recommended dose can have other knock on health issues.

Thank you for the reply Bkin. I've fallen at the first hurdle by the look of it. I meant a combination of meds rather than a combination inhaler, sorry. The nurse knows that I need more Fostair, so she is suggesting different inhalers to try so that I can cut it down. I suppose I thought that I might be able to suggest something that works for others.

Hi, I have COPD with asthma overlap. My current inhalers are Ventolin, Fostair and Braltus. The Braltus replaced Seebri which had started making me cough when I used it, although I never felt much benefit from it. In the past I have also had Spiriva and Spiriva Respimat. Neither had any effect for me. I am still breathless but I think that it is just the progression of my lung disease.

Much of the time, as you have already found out, it is a case of try it and see with inhalers as what works for one won't necessarily work for another. You seem to have a caring doctor and nurse. I would ask for a phone consult, discuss how you are and see what is suggested. Good luck.

Thank you for the info 😊. The nurse is calling me tomorrow to see how I've got on with the Seebri. She's lovely, and we have a good relationship, so I know that she would be happy for me to suggest something else. Especially as this was the 3rd inhaler that hasn't been very successful.

Hi, I have asthma and copd. My inhalers work pretty well. I’m on ventolin, Symbicort 400/12 and Spiriva. The Symbicort was the game changer for me, it really helped, but we’re all obviously different and react differently to things...

Hi wilmacarstart,I have asthma copd and bronchiectasis and use a combination of seretide 250mg and ventolin evohaler with montelukast 10mg in the evening to open the airways it's a great combination for me to keep breathlessness and coughing at bay.

Thank you all so much 🤗. Bit overwhelmed by all the kindness. I've spoken to the nurse this morning & she wants to confirm the asthma part, so I'm having a blood test next week. Hopefully this will help to decide the next step. Take care everyone. X

I find Spiriva good as a maintenance inhaler, but also use salamol. I recently had a continuous spot of pain in my back, which got worse of exertion and took one puff of fostair, which seemed to clear it. I was going to discuss this with my nurse, as when I tried fostair on its own, it was good in the morning but useless at night.I found Spiriva good and one puff of fostair in the morning, but am not really following any medical instructions.

Great if you can find anything out. I have severe/very severe copd plus asthma.

I have COPD X ASTHMA . Im also on fostair and I was told to take.morning an night but not tomwprry of inhad to use it more. I have found it a lifesaver.

I too have copd & asthma overlap...I'm on seebri, fostair and ventolin...I have been in the seebri for about 18mths but I don't find it helps much. X

Hi i have copd and asthma otherwise known as ACOS fev 46% with inhalers . i manage to keep it under control with Symbicort 400 2 puff's twice a day and spiriva/tipitropium once every 24 hour .and of course the trusty blue inhaler as an emergency only. i also found that eggs are a massive asthma trigger. along with something in a multivitamins tablet probably the same thing that is in a egg white. Also ibuprofen which of course most things anti-inflammatory can cause asthma attacks.

I take spiriva respimat and fostair they seem to work well together for me. I have overlap with asthma/ emphysema
