Ventolin nubules

I have been prescribed Ventolin 2.5 nebules for use with a nebuliser. Are all nebulisers the same?, if not can someone recommend one.

I have a Phillips innospire essence and a beurer model. Both are good. Had use of two others in the past. To me they are all of a muchness, could not separate one from another.

All nebulisers will nebulise ventolin and saline. Some nebulisers are not suitable for antibiotics because the fluid is heavier,the molecules bigger and the neb not strong enough. I have had mostly Phillips nebulisers in the past for all three meds.. All good. I now have a Pari eneb which is very quick, silent and produces a very fine mist. You might think that it is far too expensive just for ventolin though.

It wasn't explained to me the purpose of the nebules, or what type of nebuliser to use, but given that the nebules are, as far as I can see just a saline solution, what benefits am I likely to see from their use?.

You say that you were given ventolin nebules. This is drug to open your airways and help you breathe better. Nebilising it can make it more effective than the hand hepd inhaler.Some of us nebulise saline to loosen mucus so that we can get it out. Saline comes in nebules too.I really don't understand why the doctor prescribing the ventolin couldn't take five minutes to explain that. Still, that's why we are here for you and you come to us for support. Hope that helps

Many thanks for your reply, I have become increasingly breathless and following a scan was put on a course of prednisolon, along with 2 weeks of co amoxilin, followed by 8 weeks of azithromizin, and one nebule 4x day

Sounds like a plan. I hope that the nebulised ventolin nebules help with the breathlessness.

I have had a number of different brands over the years.

The battery powered ones unsurprisingly are less powerful than the ones you plug in, so expect battery powered ones to take longer to complete the nebulisation. I do have both types though as that gives me more flexibility. I use a plug in one when at home and keep a battery powered one in the car so should I need it, I have access. Also useful for when on trips/holiday etc.

Nebulizers are not all created equal, nor are they of equal cost. The one that my insurance provided me (in the U.S.) sounded like a 747 airplane taking off and took a very long time delivering the ventolin. With my own money at more than twice the price, I purchased a Phillips Innospire handheld device that is silent and delivery much quicker. It has made a huge difference for me, but at a cost. I purchased mine on Amazon. Good luck and hope that you find a unit that is right for you.

Hi Cad7 , I bought 4 month ago Philips respironics neb. from eBay( £50) .I used with ventonin, is very quick( 3 minutes I finished ventolin). After ventolin I used with colomycin & saline water. Hope that helps. Good luck,

Check out Evergreen nebulisers in the UK.Not the cheapest but a good range .....I have a small battery one and a larger mains operated ..I used to have one that did both but it was huge and heavy .

Evergreen can advise through email or phone .

But first , if you have been prescribed nebules, check with your health professional to see if the NHS will provide a nebuliser .

My first one was prescribed by the consultant and the hospital loaned me a nebuliser, I later bought my own as I wanted a portable one .

Please contact your gp on Monday to ask about the prescription before you spend money .....saline moistens and loosens lung secretions , Ventolin opens up .check first with the the NHS professional for more details , how to use nebules, what they do , any side effects etc.

The BLF have a helpline too, open on Monday on 03000 030 555. They can advise .

I use an Omron nebuliser from Evergreen Nebulisers as mentioned above Evergreen are very good. My local health authority won’t prescribe nebulisers but they do prescribe the saline solution and any other medication.

I have just bought a Phillips from evergreen as my hospital issue one was just about to expire. I called them first told them my meds and they advised straight away. I have a more powerful one as I nebulise antibiotics. You should take into account whether you want a portable one. If this is temporary it would be worthwhile checking if the hospital will loan you one. I haven’t found evergreen any dearer as they don’t charge VAT and don’t make you fill in the forms to reclaim it.

hi. some av ventolin in .others av steriods in an some are just saline water in.dont know of others if that helps.some nebulizers only work with steriods . not all
