Spinal Fusion identified while on Lung Transplant List

Good morning all,

I have been listed on the Lung Transplant List for over 2 1/2 years now. They noticed I had the start of osteoporosis when I was officially listed which they put down to years of taking prednisolone. I have recently had another bone density scan and it showed up a spinal fusion? Has anyone else been taken off the lung transplant list because of this? I ask because my sternum would need opening up or ribs might need to be removed to perform the operation and with softening of the bones further problems may occur.

I welcome all your comments.

Whilst I am not on a transplant list, there are obvious complications that may arise. You will need to discuss it with your consultant. I have found some info to help you formulate the questions for you to to ask.

Hello again, I had part of one of my lungs removed at 6 months of age I was born with brittle asthma. I was then diagnosed with severe bronchiectasis at 36 with COPD and now I am stage 4 COPD.

I’m sorry to hear this, Joseph. I don’t have personal experience but wondered if you’d been put on any home protecting medications? Take care.

I have been on Alandronic acid for the last 5 years to help strengthen my bones but as everyone gets older even healthier people their bones start to go into decline. Thank you for replying 🙏

Hi Joseph. I also have osteoporosis and I also take alendronic acid as well as Adcal which I take daily. I really hope this doesn't affect your prospects for lung transplant. Hopefully taking the alendronic acid will have had a beneficial effect. It did in my case but I am not waiting for a transplant so can't comment on the implications. The only thing I can tell you is that I was told to stop taking it after 6 years and have a rest because there is a fear that it can make your bones more susceptible to fracture if taken for too long. I was off it for 4 years and have now been put back on it. Good luck.
