Prednisolone

Hi, I am fairly new here, but posted earlier that I was diagnosed 4 years ago following a ct scan, I am on rescue pack Amoxicillin. However I have had 3 really bad infections in 3 months and this last one has left me feeling wretched with no sign of my continuous cough clearing, so my Consultant has now put me on a course of Prednisolone together with Amoxicillin , and I was just wondering if anyone else has been prescribed this, and did it help. 🤗

Yes absolutely, its the usual treatment. The prednisolone helps with the inflammation so opening the airways allowing more oxygen in and hopefully the infected mucus out. Continue to drink plenty of fluids. Some say to avoid caffeine while you're on the pred. Always take the pred as early in the morning as you can with a bit of food (I take mine at 5am with a couple of oatcakes then go back to sleep), it can make some people wakeful at night.

Good luck and make sure you let the doc know if youre not on the mend before the antibiotics finish. P

Hi Peege, 🤗Many thanks for your reply and your helpful tips which I will certainly try, to be honest I will do anything just to feel a little better. I do everything I am supposed to do re clearing etc but it still seems to get 🙈.

You take care.

I forgot to mention that Amoxicillin has never ever helped me either. Any abs I and many of us here has to be 2 weeks minimum.

Yes usual medication for lung infections. I usual prescribed now is a different AB though, Amoxicillin is no loger effective for me and I need a 2 weeks course of the ABs but just the one of the prednisolone.

Your consultant may have prescribed a longer dose of the prednisolone, do follow your consultants advice.

Hope you are soon feeling better.

Hi Bain🤗,Many thanks for your reply, it is interesting what you say about Amoxicillin not working for you, and I am wondering if that is case for me as normally after a

2 weeks course of 2 x 500 amoxicillin 3 times daily, I usually improve, but sadly not this time. Hopefully combined with Prednisolone 6 a day for 5 days I will improve.

I will certainly chat with consultant about trying an alternative.

You take care.

I don't tend to have problems with peedesolone but amoxicillin I have found chest infection seems to clear up and I get another they seemed to be more frequent had a chat and agreed on a change and at the moment not having as many flare ups. Amoxicillin dosent always seem to suit everyone

yes that's what I take had a course 3 weeks ago just finished another prednisone course ofsix tablets a day for 5 days no antibiotic oxygen levels went up feel ok you will go down a bit

but will find your own level after a couple of days they can also make your skin thin and you will bruise easily

Hope you are felling better.Havetaken prednisolone daily for last 17 years.

Have rescue pack of more prednisolone plus amoxicillin for when ill.

Really helpful in an emergency -use the rescue pack as directed by your doctor.

Good luck

Hi Ninelives 🤗, thanks for your reply, I am today just beginning to feel bit better, So pleased I was given Prednisolone together with my antibiotics.

Keep safe .

Steroids are extremely useful and very commonplace in managing a variety of lung conditions. They’re also very quick-acting which is another great benefit.

Others have mentioned about amoxicillin not working for them: as with all infections, when that happens it’s a case of the underlying bacteria either not being sensitive to the particular antibiotic, or developing resistance to the antibiotic over time, rather than just not working for a particular person. I’d be surprised if they’re not, but is your consultant actually testing your sputum to see what bacteria is responsible for the ongoing infections? There’s zero point repeatedly giving you an antibiotic if it’s the wrong one for the job. You don’t say what your diagnosis is, but with some lung conditions like bronchiectasis, aside from needing longer courses of treatment than ‘normal’ chest infections, the bacteria involved are often things like pseudomonas aeruginosa (not so affectionately referred to as pseudo around here), that only respond to very particular drugs.

Hi Charlie-G 🤗Many thanks for reply.

I had a CT scan 4 years ago and was diagnosed with Bronchiestasis

Up until now my Rescue Pack of Amoxicillin 2 x 500 3 times daily for 2 weeks, seems to work, but that has not been case as I have 3 infections in 3 months and it has not cleared them completely, I have also given sputum samples.

As you say maybe I need a change of antibiotics, I will speak to Consultant.

Just finished a course myself & my cough has gone thank heavens , although it took 2 courses to clear mine with a different antibiotic . I was advised by this group to drink lots of water as it thins out the mucus. Loads of advice when you need it , hope you get the same results x
