Reaction to inhalers

Here we go again... another reaction to a new inhaler to try! Using Spiriva and have eye irritation and needed to see the eye doctor. He put me on an antihistamine eye drop and comfort drops. Seems like I have had a reaction to Advair and now Spiriva. He told me to use the drops for 1 week and see if I feel better. I am so scared that this is from the Spiriva. What next?? Will Ifind an inhaler that I will not have a reaction to? I am so down about this as I just want to find something that works and get on with my life!

I don't know anything about Spiriva but could you use a spacer to inhale, that would prevent any of the content getting in your eyes. Have a look on the instructions etc. Perhaps someone on here who uses Spiriva would know.

I use the Spireva Respimat and it fits my spacer. Keeps anything out of your eyes that way. I think the poster probably uses the tablet version you have to crush and inhale. They didn't work for me as not enough puff and found the bits not fine enough.

I'll bear that in mind for future reference, thanks!

Maybe steam or a shower to help clean out Spiriva after you take it. Just an idea.I take Spiriva but haven't had any problems with my eyes. All the best

I take Spiriva, the Respimat version, and I use a spacer with it. I find that it gives me blurred vision, as if I’ve got something in my eyes. Unfortunately most inhalers seem to come with their own selection of side effects ☹️ I guess you have to weigh up whether the benefits of the inhaler outweigh the side effects. I hope you can find something that suits you. 🤞

Hi Solily. I have the same problem from the inhalers with my throat & tongue since three month ago. I have Spiriva, too (the resprimat version), Symbicort and blue inhaler. I had many appointments with my GP, ENT dr, Rheumatology Dr. They said can be oral lichen planus from my inhalers. It is very painfully and burning. This week I'll go to the Dermatologist because all treatments didn't work. I put all my hopes in Dermatologist to prescribed me a good treatment. I hope you will be better soon and find something that suits you.

I have taken Spirava for around ten years now with no problem . However the instructions do warn you to be careful not to get in the eyes. As already said above it can take quite a while to find suitable inhalers . I used to take combivent and had to change because it was taken off the prescription list in UK. It took around two years trial & error to get a substitute. Sure you will find one that works for you given time. Good Luck.

As was suggested, a spacer definitely helps. Very sympathetic towards you. I've had problems finding an inhaler I don't react to.

Years ago a specialist informed a friend of mine in the USA she should close her eyes when nebulizing and using spiriva respimat and using other meds with a spacer. I guess in her case the specialist thought that this would help protect her eyes.

I started using spiriva over 14 years ago I am still using it. started with handihaler and now using respimat. Good if you can get on with it, its been the one inhaler that has helped me most to bend over and be more active due to breathing easier.

Being scared of one med may lead you to another that may not work so well, but the journey to help you breathe easier is one to discuss with your doctor.

Give your doctor the benefit of his expertise and try the eye drops for a week and close your eyes when you use the inhaler, rinse out mouth and brush teeth after use and before breakfast.

Best wishes
