Got a phone call at 8.30 this morning inviting me and 79 year old hubby to go for vaccine at local hospital this morning. Got there; the queue was horrendous. We had to wait for 45 minutes past our appointment times, but at least we've been done. So far no ill effects from the vaccine (Pfizer) not even a sore arm, but absolutely shattered when we got home, probably from standing for so long in the cold wind. There has been much moaning and groaning up till now about the lack of vaccine centres in the Braintree district, in spite of the fact that Covid rates in this area are very high. I imagine once they get their act together ,they will become more efficient.

That’s good news Alberta. Shame about the long wait though. I hope Pete doesn’t have to wait too long on Friday when he has his jab.

No unfortunately I have to wait. Crazy but true. I’ve spoken to the receptionist and I’ve been registered as Pete’s carer (thank you Aingeful) but it makes no difference it seems.

That really is ridiculous sassy - especially as they're immunising the staff in the care homes at the same time as the residents, which is as it should be. I just hope you don't have too long to wait to get yours. Hope things go smoothly for Pete on Friday x

It's good that you both got your vaccine but not good that you had to queue for so long in cold weather. I really don't think that that has been taken into consideration for many. I certainly could not have done that.

At our doctors surgery they have ill patients who have been invited to the surgery for an appointment queuing outside in all weathers!

You'd really expect a GP surgery to have a bit more thought.
Yes I agree fancy expecting vulnerable people to freeze standing outside as this could be one main reason apart from great distance for many to travel for a lot of people not having the jab.
My husband commented about the proposed 24 hour venues and who they are expecting to attend during the nigh. He wondered if it was realistic for elderly to be given a nightime appointment.
I think it’s very very silly to expect any one over 65 to drive or even stay awake at night it’s obvious it’s some one young or very thoughtless as my 80 year old friend crashed in the dark st only 5.30 . Us oldies can’t see in the dark . We just wouldn’t go and stay safe till our local doctor or pharmacy could do us as they do with flue jabs.
I don't drive any more but have also been housebound for 6 months. I had a home visit for my flu vaccine but, so far, there has been nothing said about providing covid vaccine for housebound people.

Glad you got your vaccine. Not easy in British winter climate to cope with mass vaccination and queues. Hope everything is easier as time goes on.
There seems to be a lack of common sense around. One of the reasons for them falling behind with appointments is that people turn up with enough clothing on to open a charity shop. It takes them for ever to bare an arm and then to another to put everything back again. Most over 80's have walking sticks with them which have clattered on the floor and have to be recovered. As people hear what a shamble it is they will wear even more clothes to withstand the cold weather! If a venue isn't large enough to provide undercover assistance with clothing then appointments need spreading thinner.

As you say, Don, a great lack of common sense. I think it was in the Sheffield area last week that a large venue had opened to offer vaccines. They had built a long, quite steeply sloping ramp up to the entrance. One elderly lady was reported to have said as she struggled up the ramp "I'm 85, I'll be 86 when I get there". An amusing comment but I felt sorry for her difficulty in getting there.

I have a “ cunning plan “ to quote Baldrick , stuff a hot water bottle down your neck and have a tighter waistband. I do that on cold nights at home so I can walk into the kitchen 😊 I shall do that for the jab 👍🏻

Being grateful for bad service is not a good idea. My own experience was flawless so it can be done.

It's amazing how much safer you feel once you've had it? We had proper timed appointments, I didnt have to wait at all. Our centre was extremely well organised!

Good to hear the vaccine is getting around- pity about the wait - sounds awful Should be more organised though I think they are trying to jab as many as possible Pity they didn't think more about the wait in the awful weather and the age group concerned xx
I am just 70 and had mine last week at my doctors surgery. Very efficient, phoned me the night before, maybe no one else wanted the appointment as it was at 8am. I was just grateful to get it done. They had put out a few chairs for people who could not stand. It was raining hard but there was a canopy giving some shelter.
