Tracheal narrowing and asthma

Hi,

I have severe uncontrollable persistent asthma, several hospital admissions etc. I had a CT scan of my neck done alongside some other tests, it showed that my oesophagus is pushing into my trachea and that my trachea has narrowed by half. Has anyone else experienced this? I am under respiratory, cardiology and gastroenteroligists as they think all of thr symptoms are linked i agree and think they are too. My lungs showed scarring at the bottom too I'm 29 and don't smoke so this worried me slightly! I am so breathless every day i often have to use a wheelchair and my sats regularly drop into 80's at which point I end up on oxygen in hospital on various medications. Its really stressful and I feel horrific most of the time.. Im also a single parent so hospital admissions are really difficult and I usually have to push to be discharged before I'm fully ready!

Hi, I have found this article:

UCSF Team Learns More About Why Airway Closes Up During Asthma Attacks, at this link

It may well help to email Mallar Bhattacharya, Md. to ask if there has been any progress and a possible treatment. You might then take that information to your consultant. His email is:

I have had asthma all my life and I was feeling short of breath for many years. Then I had a CT scan which showed I had a growth in my neck and chest, pushing into the trachea.

Sometimes when I was talking it my voice would turn into a squeal or no voice would emerge at all at certain pitches. Other symptoms were vague. e.g. feeling faint when putting clothes on the line, carrying a bag over my shoulder, taking a warm shower, discomfort with clothes around my neck etc. And also, eventually, pain like an iron band crushing my chest after walking up stairs. My oxygen saturation was 92 or below.

It took over 10 years to diagnose as symptoms only appeared gradually and I probably sounded a bit like a hypochondriac to a doctor.

A CT scan of the neck and chest revealed one side of my thyroid gland growing down through my neck, pushing onto my trachea, and into my chest. In my chest it was the size of a tennis ball, pressing on other organs. The symptoms disappeared and breathing improved following removal of the half of the thyroid that was growing. It was benign (not cancer).

Hope this is helpful to you one way or the other.

Thank you for this! I completely relate to those feelings. I've not come across anyone else with a narrowed trachea, glad that you're feeling better now!
