Desperate Update

Hi everyone thankyou again for your support. Finally saw physio today for some reason l had been wiped off her list. Within 5min she had me going great guns can not describe the relief. She cleared me to go home after showing her my clearance technique round 1 to me. Saw consultant who said l could go home if they could organize meds then disaster. Pharmacist would not prescribe ceftazidime on news saying there was no proof it was effective as treatment nebulised. Would not support me to give home iv. Last chance was for GP to support with IV however understandably they feel they can not help at this time. So here are the stark choices stay and recieve treatment or go home with no follow up treatment. I have decided to compromise and stay until monday. Mentally this has nearly broken me with no access to fresh air or my normal green tea vitamin D ect all the things that keep us bronchs on track . I will not go into things like tv being on constantly and total lack of privacy when discussing medical needs .lt all paints a very bleak picture for the sake of 2 does of antibiotics a day. Think of all the resources our poor national health could save including a very important bed if there were another choice.

Oh dear me Delamere, I do feel for you, and just when you thought you were on the homeward straight.

Hoping you can go home on Monday with something in place to help. Thinking of you. Xxxxxx

Hmmm. Shouldn’t the consultant be discussing with pharmacist ways forward? I would be complaining to PALS that consultant recommendation not being agreed to and no discussions taking place so you can leave hospital safely.Hope you feeling better soon.

You need to get a doc on to that pharmacist. I have nebulised ceftazidime successfully against pseudomonas for 15 yrs. Prescribed by my consultant.. Ignorance again. I'm so glad that you got your physio.

So sorry Delamere to hear that you can't yet go home. Glad you had some physio and it helped. Hopefully Monday they might sort something out. xx

So the pharmacist is clearly in charge of your case! 😮 That is scary, as you say they've left you with very little choice. I do hope they get their knickers untwisted for you in good time for you to go home.

Good news about the physio but not good news about the pharmacist. I didn't think pharmacists could overrule what a doctor has prescribed. I hope you get home soon. Thinking of you.

Genuine question - no sarcasm intended - has the role of pharmacist been upgraded in the past 18 months or so?

I had a problem with one of my regular meds for vertigo. I didn't realise that the dose had been halved so ran out of pills half way through the month. When I phoned my GP to ask why the prescription had been changed she went into the computer record to find out and said, 'Oh no! Our pharmacist has been meddling again!' She restored my original prescription and vowed she would speak to them about it. I then had a similar experience with another med.

It almost seems to me that they may have had their role somewhat enlarged.

I do hope something gets sorted out for you soon so that you can go home.

xx Moy

I have a feeling they must have been unfortunately.

I'm sure most of them are doing the best they can, but perhaps one or two have got too big for their boots! However, if it's simply that they have been given extra responsibilities and are working within their new remit, I feel something needs to be reviewed.

I hope they sort things out for you to go home on Monday. xx Moy

Thankyou. I think there is a lot of confusion about in these trying times.

I think you will find a lot of how the pharmacists operate now is as a result of the Hunt administration - they were asked to take on more responsibilities to help the GPs, A & E's and Ambulance services and to help cut costs. It would seem in a lot of cases interference has become more the norm than perhaps what was anticipated. My Dr was apalled to hear that I had been buying my own Ventolin for two years because the pharmacy had replaced it with Salamol and point blank refused to change it. She was cross with me for not telling her before and soon turned that around!

I had a friend and two relations work in pharmacies for many years, two of which resigned in the end because of the treatment they continually received from the general public because their scripts had been changed. Pharmacists are of course highly trained professionals but I still don't think it's right that they should be allowed to interfere to the extent that it seems they have.

I totally agree with you. I have every respect for pharmacists and the difficult job they do. However l do feel that doctors especially consultants should have the final say otherwise why don't we simply make all of them redundant and increase pharmacys and pharmacists. Feeling a bit bitter today not given much fought for prednisone until lunch time so had a morning of struggling and using reliver inhaler

Absolutely! I'm glad you're feeling a little better but I find it a bit scary that you can suffer like this in hospital when the whole point of you being there is to relieve suffering and help you! As others have said so many times if people without breathing difficulties just spent an hour or so fighting for every breath, things would turn around very quickly! This is why I wondered earlier if you were in a medical assessment ward as opposed to a lung ward. We had a similar experience to this a few years ago with our youngest daughter. She had UC and we had to rush her to A&E one Sunday afternoon - for four days we sat by her bed in an assessment ward pleading for a message to be got through to her consultant as nothing was being done for her. On the Friday am, one of his registrars happened to come into the ward, saw her and asked us what was she doing there we explained - within half an hour she was in her old ward and within two hours in the OR!! I'm afraid there's a lot of misguided professionalism in any institution and God help you if as a layman you question it!

I hope you continue feeling better and get home Monday xx

Surely the system should include a step where the pharmacist consults the doctor if they want to change a prescription. Otherwise doctors don't learn of developments in pharmaceutical policy. Nuts!
