Continuing care nhs package

I’ve been lucky enough to have been offered 2 people, 4 times a day for an hour each time, though times will change as needs assessed.

I am almost bedbound now due to severe breathing problems, which spilled into heart damage. Are there others on the forum with similar packages please and what do the carers do. They are starting this afternoon. I am hoping for a bedbath and tidy of bed today but wanted to know what else they do. They are coming about 8.30 am, 11.30, 4.00 and sometime in evening. Any info welcome please.

Xx jo

Hi Jo

I don't get this service but I am so glad you have been able to access the help you need.

I would say you can pretty much ask them about anything you may need, and if its not in their job description they may well be able to put you in touch with someone else who can help in any way.

Very Best Wishes to you, do let us know how things are working out for you as and when you feel so inclined to do.

They should do whatever is written into your care plan of which you should have a copy. They are no different from careers that visit either under social services or privately however and the only difference is in who funds them.

Standard care would be helping you visit the toilet or commode.using mechanical aids where required and washing and dressing you should that be required etc etc check out your care plan and adjustments can be made if required so that you get the service you require.

Wishing you the best of luck and a good service as you are very lucky to have recieved this package of care as most people rarely get accepted for it.

Ski's and Scruff's

p.s if a nursing element is required this should be provided with the care package.

Hi, as Ski's said, they should do whatever you need them to do at each visit, whether you have a written care plan or not. As you get to know them and they you, you will develop a basic routine which can be adapted at each visit depending on what you need at that time. It may include personal care such as hygiene and toilet needs, making you something to eat, changing your bed when needed and basic housework if needed. If they are to be involved in getting you something to eat and drink, ask them to wash up too if there is no one else to do that for you. That should be part of their tasks too.I hope that it proves to be a big help for you and that you get on well with the carers. Best wishes xx

Hello, I worked as a carer out in the community. We would follow what’s in your care plan. If there is anything you find you are wanting help for that’s not getting done because it’s not in your care plan, just let the care providers know and they will try and sort it. There will be some carers who will probably do the extras outside your care package (as long as they have time) but there might be some who stick to the rule book by the letter. But don’t be afraid to ask...they’re there for you and your well being!!! 😊Hope it all goes well!

I used to follow the client's care plan when I worked for a care agency. The sorts of things I did included, preparing microwave meals, sandwiches and drinks, helping the client change clothes and clean them or the room up if they had an accident, put out medication for them to take, and sit and talk with them if there was time.

Thanks ergendl. It sounds like you were a wonderful carer. My carers so far have been very kind and washed and showered me. They are very caring but for instance water left on bathroom floor, wet towel left on seat needed hanging up. Shampoo and soap got out but left out.. the bathroom sink after 2 days is lime-scaled. . I always used to wipe it round with bathroom cleaner. . I’m sure they will do these things if I ask but a bit surprised it was not natural and when I’m only just surviving the huffing and puffing I didn’t notice at time. Thanks Ergendyl

I think that some carers don't see what stares us in the face and to some extent it is sloppy work. As frustrating as it can be don't be afraid to ask them to do these simple things. I hope that, as time goes on, you iron out these things and that everything gets done as you wish it to.

I have carers coming and they are mostly very good and happy to do anything I ask them to, within reason of course.

One of my sisters has carers and they have developed a routine for her which suits her. She is not afraid to ask them to do things for her and they all seem quite happy to oblige. They all seem to be really nice people and good at their job, she has had a few awkward ones but they have moved along thank goodness. I hope everything works well for you x
