Ella Kissi-Debrah: Air pollution a factor in girl's death, inquest finds.

A nine-year-old girl who died following an asthma attack has become the first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death.

Ella Kissi-Debrah, who lived near the South Circular Road in Lewisham, south-east London, died in 2013.

In the three years before her death, she had multiple seizures and was admitted to hospital 27 times.

Southwark Coroner's Court found that air pollution "made a material contribution" to Ella's death.

Ella's mother has campaigned valiantly since since her death to prevent other children suffering in the same way. She is a real heroine of mine.

It’s so sad it’s taken so long for this inquest to happen

This poor child. Sad justice has taken so long but hopefully clean air will be taken more seriously. Agree with you Alberta56. Her Mum is an amazing woman - campaigning and always so dignified.

Thank you 2g.

Ella was a pretty special child too, uncomplaining and so concerned for other children's welfare.

The irony in this welcome, but tragic announcement is, it comes on the same day as the third runway at Heathrow has been given the right to go for planning permission, if this passes there will be yet more pollution, not forgetting the inevitable extra roads that will be needed for the extra airport traffic!

It won’t happen Ian1967 cos our Prime Minister is going to lie down in front of the bulldozers to prevent it 😆

Wasn't Ella's mum wonderful when talking about her daughter? This is good news for others x

The sad thing is no-one ever mentions indoor pollution or other factors. I have bronchiectisis and not asthma but I have not been able to tolerate gas appliance fumes, perfumes including in shampoo etc, cleaning materials and detergents, and printing materials too, for more than 30 years. Any new purchase is a problem. The focus should be on all forms of pollution not just one, otherwise people will still suffer.

Absolutely horrific that children have to endure intolerable pollution like this. Well Done to her Mum for pursuing this issue despite her loss. 😢

That news made the papers here in the States as well.

I live in the states and that even made the new here.

Hopefully, air pollution will become one of a priority in that area. Of course, like with most things when the government becomes involved : It's shutting the barn door after the cow got out.
