ITCHY NOSE AND SNEEZING OF A MORNING

I have mild bronchiectasis and asthma which was caused by reflux(now on omeprazole).I am reasonably fit and healthy but I now get post nasal drip,a lot of mucus on the back of my throat and of a morning itchy nose and sneeezing.also,a bit of a weird one..my saliva always seems to be the colour of whatever I have been eating or drinking even a good bit afterwards.unless I had just never noticed that before.

Has anyone found a magic cure for post nasal drip or the itching and sneezing?

Hi, Your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. I have bronchiectasis, itchy nose and sneezing together with dreadful sinusitis which has made me partially deaf. I have a build up of mucous behind the middle ear and having an operation to have my ear drained and grommets fitted. I have taken Omaprazole for over 10 years but a new doctor advised me to reduce them from 20mg to 10mg to coming off them altogether. I am down to 10mg and hope to eventually take Gaviscon extra instead.

For the allergy type symptoms I take Loratadine tablets and annasal spray both on prescription.

Its a distressing condition we have and are all linked. I hope others on here will be able to give you a few more answers.

Cheers for now.

Yes,I am.trying to lower my dose of omeprazole too.i was on 40 but I'm taking 20 now.I did get a steroid nasal spray but it actually made the mucus really thick in my nose for some reason, but might be worth another go.

I did try a natural nasal spray called capsinol which is basically the pepper capsicum and it did seem to really help with the itching and sneezing but I could only find it online and it's not cheap.

I just came across a study about capsicum when reading up.

Might be worth a try yourself

HiI also have asthma and bronchiectasis and on top of this chronic sinusitis and ongoing ear problems. (But no reflux issues)

I have had ear problems since I was a child, with grommets inserted in both years repeatedly. These problems got better as I was growing up and my ears did not bother we much for a long time but the problem has unfortunately come back again the last few years. (I am 59 ).

My nose has been running at both ends 😂 for most of my life which I always thought was something linked to my allergies and I simply would have to get on with.

About 2 1/2 years ago I got really bad hearing problems with my ears feeling constantly blocked and tinnitus. I was referred to an ENT specialist who diagnosed my ear and postnasal drip to be linked to chronic sinusitis.

Maybe this could be the problem with your postnasal drip too?

I was recommended to have ENT surgery to clear out my sinuses and "open" them by shaving away damaged and inflamed tissue (The procedure is called FESS, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery). As there is also a link between bronchiectasis and chronic sinusitis and added bonus could also be a reduction in respiratory infections, flare ups.

I had the FESS surgery done about 20 months ago and it has been a great relief!

Rarely any problems with postnasal drip or rhinitis at all and my chest is feeling much better too.

I will have to cary on treating the sinusitis with steroid nose spray and saline rinses every day but this is not very hard to keep up. Occasionally my ears get blocked again and I have to get steroid nose drops for a week or 2 to clear it all up but overall FESS is really something I would recommend.

Hi again Dooie, I have severe copd, asthma and bronchiectasis secondary to the copd. I also take lansoprazone for reflux and barretts oesophagus (15mg).

Im lucky that I have almost no mucus on my chest but I do get nasty sticky stuff in my throat, causing a cough and sometimes dreadful itching which gives me a useless cough, useless in that it doesnt relieve the itch which is slightly below where I can cough.

So: two things, first I find Fisherman's Friends lozenges fantastic - they instantly relieve the itch. I use the original ones which have no added sugar.

Secondly lots of members here with bronchiectasis use a thing called a flutter devise, there are other brands which do the same thing. You blow hard into it - it's like a little pipe and it has a large ball bearing inside which oscillates and that helps dislodge the mucus. Normally given for mucus in the lungs but I find it fantastic for bringing up thick sticky mucus in the throat. I get laryngospasm (spasm coughing around the voicebox) when the mucus slips down my throat and the flutter device has really sorted it out.

They cost about £50 on the net and are well worth it (assuming you can afford it in the first place - they should be prescribed of course and I have heard of people getting them that way but my practice doesnt do it).

O2trees I too don't get much from my lungs but the same the mucus on throat can be really itchy and feel like I need to swallow all the time.Sometimes it feels like I can't take a full breath but then if I swallow, I can afterwards.really strange and I think probably something to do with my throat probably due to when my reflux was bad.

It stops me yawning too

Hi Dooie,

I have severe asthma and used to have terrible post nasal drip and sinusitis. And I’d be sneezing non stop. I am now prescribed certrizine for the sneezing 🤧...it’s like a magic tablet for me! You can buy it over the counter too. I’ve hardly sneezed ever since. I’m also prescribed avamys nasal spray for post nasal drip. It’s helped lots and with the sinusitis..but it’s a steroidal spray.

Yes I had similar symptoms plus serious cough, on Omeprazol for approx five years and most symptoms other than reflux started after i took the omeprazol. eventually read about silent reflux, symptoms etc, came off omeprazol and started taking PEPTAC several times a day and occasionally at night. within two weeks my cough, which had been very bad , had gone and runny nose and mucus etc loads better plus no sore throat and voice improving. Certainly worth a try.

Hi have you considered using neilmed sinus rinse? It rinses all that mucus out of your sinuses. I’ve also had the FESS twice. My infections have often started in my sinuses before landing in my lungs so I like to crack down on any problems quickly.
