So £7.50 delivery slot charge and a further £4 on top if you are unable to afford the £40 minimum charge to have shopping delivered....deep joy for single shoppers :-( We didn't need costly food boxes just access to smaller spend deliveries....Grrr... rant over xx

Sainsbury's have a choice of delivery times and prices. I had delivery today for only £1.

Tesco standard £4 .

Iceland £2.50

R u shopping at Harrods?

Shop for 3 weeks ahead on average.

Comino2 profile image
Comino2 in reply to Bkin

Sadly, that is certainly not the case at the Tesco and Iceland or Sainsburys here and all have a minimum charge of £40 [ £35 at iceland] I would guess that it would depend on how many or the size of the stores that there are in your local area. Each store would have a set amount of delivery slots depending on amount of delivery drivers maybe ? There are no slots available here at any of these stores except a couple of Tescos 'priority' slots if you are registered as clinically extremely vulnerable and they are £7.50. Which I think is unfair to those unable to get supplies any other way. :-( [no such charge in 1st lockdown]

Difficult to keep bread for 3 weeks without a large freezer and longlife milk is expensive.Alternative breakfasts required methinks

I am not in the habit of making things up and have no desire to shop in Harrods even if my sickness benefit could cover the cost of their groceries so no sarcasm please. :-(

Let's hope it will be just for 4 weeks as Boris says :-)

PS Morrisons are doing a special telephone service with a smaller minimum charge I have been told in some areas....I shall look into it :-) x

Bkin in reply to Comino2

Oh dear it must be the post code thing again. I guess people in London will certainly be paying more for delivery. I certainly don't have a large freezer and my longlife milk is cheaper than fresh. But any how going off topic here so will discontinue further discussion.

Hope you find success with Morrisons - no morrisons in my area nor Asda.

I live on the south coast.

It ain’t a postcode thing and u aint makin it up. I get like 50 quid a week to live on and most of the supermarkits want £40 minimum spend and then delivry charge on top. Or I can spend 25 quid but then a tenner 4 a taxi? And getting 3 weeks in advanse Bkin is a joke if u on a small income.

Here’s a websit and it tells unwot the supermarkits want. They put all the pricis up in like september

Good website, Charlotte. Thanks 🌸 I’ll use that.

I’ll just say I do a Waitrose delivery shop that’s free, every other week or less (cheaper!) min spend £40. Go for Essential Waitrose stuff, it’s their cheapest and it’s good. Mike’s been laughing at me for months, shopping at Waitrose, but it’s better than he thinks, price-wise.

Yes they also sell expensive stuff but their cheap Essential line is good. No delivery charges ever. It was the first supermarket who accepted me way back in March, after a lot of knock backs, and I’ve stuck with them ever since.

Just saying......xx

I’ll have a look Penny thanks. Our local Waitrose shut a few weeks ago but theres prob another 1 around I exspect? X

So do I Comino. 👍xx

Certainly not a post code thing Comino and most of the large supermarkets have the same delivery criteria with regard to minimum spends and delivery charges. I have had to accrue a well stocked wine and spirits cellar just so I can manage to maintain a regular supply of basic fresh foods such as dairy products like milk etc.

Perhaps worth investigating your local milkman if one exists who often deliver the basics as part of their business?

Good luck in your endeavours 🙃x

Are you saying I have to buy half a dozen bottles of wine in order to have my tea and toast ? 🤪 xx

skischool profile image
skischool in reply to Comino2

No just 2 bottles of blood red orange infused Gin on offer with a medium loaf and some twinnings strong breakfast tea should hit the £40 with maybe enough spare change for some hobnob biscuits. :)

xx

Every week ? x

Without fail though i do intend to go on a hobnobs withdrawal programme for the sake of my health. :)

sassy59 in reply to skischool

😂I actually book a couple of weeks in advance for a free delivery slot so just pop a bottle of champagne in my trolley to be able to check out! I know I’ll forget to remove it one of these days. That Gin sounds good skis. Xxx😘

I agree £40 minimum spend is a lot when on sickness benefit (get payments every 2 weeks), especially when you live alone, and buying several weeks' supply is not really a practical way to get fresh / perishable foods like bread, milk, fruit & veg. I also have had some stuff delivered which has only one or two days shelf life left on it....

What I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND is why people on so called 'legacy benefits' like ESA (sickness benefit) have not been given an extra £20 per week whereas those on Universal Credit have been given this. The Government keep saying they have given an extra benefits £1,000 per year (£20) due to coronavirus, but NOT for some of the most vulnerable on long term sick or disabled - those who aresurely more likely to be shielding!

It's exploiting the vulnerable who have no choice. Disgusting.

Comino2 profile image
Comino2 in reply to Alberta56

I complained to Tesco [not something I would normally do but it's a really mean thing to do] Their reply was...

Previously we were subsidising delivery slots for vulnerable customers, but we have since brought delivery prices into line with all other customers. Vulnerable customers will continue to benefit from having priority when booking slots and the overall number of priority slots will not change.

Hmmm thanks Tesco for a 'priority' slot in 3 weeks time that will cost me £7.50 for the privilege.

You gotta laugh or you would cry :-)

Alberta56 in reply to Comino2

Sainsbury's here in Essex (I don't know if it varies regionally) charge me between £1 and £2.50 for a delivery . Min payment £25. You only pay £7.50 if you want a next day or urgent delivery. Tesco's are ratbags.

sassy59 profile image
sassy59 in reply to Alberta56

Not here on the south coast Alberta. Minimum payment is £40 with Sainsbury’s and cheapest delivery cost is £4.50, that’s why I get the early “free” slot. Tesco are rat bags you’re right. Xxxx

sassy59 profile image
sassy59 in reply to Comino2

Asda charged £6.50 for our usual slot so I’ve stopped shopping with them. I get a free Sainsbury’s slot every Friday between 6.30-7.30am and you could try Iceland who like you to order £25 worth of goods for a £2 delivery charge. Free delivery over £35. Hope that helps Comino2. Xxxx😀

For many years we shopped several times a week at Morrison's....

spending most of our grocery budget there .

Then came the first lockdown , Morrison's didn't want to know me.

The supermarket which came to my aid was ASDA........we never used them unless desperate for an item when passing .They are a distance away.

I was given a choice of fixed timed slots ...one, two, three, or four weekly.

Or choose as and when ........I went for as and when every two weeks .

There was a minimum cost of £40 per shop ,,

They have kept me going with a little help from a neighbour most of this year .

Asda have not charged me for deliveries right up to the end of October .

What will happen during this next lock down I don't know .........

What I do know is that my Asda deliveries will continue and Morrison's

shopping will only be for emergency odds and ends in the future.

Bellerini profile image
Bellerini in reply to Buzzytruk

Asda started charging me in Sept. They now charge me 2.50 tp 3 pound pick and pack fee and last week I added a few items the night before my delivery and cheeky sods charged me £3 minimum basket fee as the items I added only came to £8 but my shopping bill was £62. I was not happy. 😠😠

Buzzytruk profile image
Buzzytruk in reply to Bellerini

Hi.........I am now on time slots at ever increasing prices. Late evening is the cheapest at £3-50. However am going back to the old way of shopping ......My last Asda delivery was Monday just gone,. There were at least a dozen items suddenly not available & taken off my accepted list. Even substitutes became unavailable.I need to know what I order I will get . Am fortunate that I have

gathered so much stock in my cupboards ,. But I won't be using Asda again. Am going to have a look around before I decide where to shop.

Jo....😊

Bellerini in reply to Buzzytruk

Hi Jo.Thanks for Yr reply I had same problem No warburtons bread, no 6pint cartons of milk(I drink a lot of tea) and don't even get me started on flour 😂 I forgot to press no substitutes so they got sent back.

I was just looking at Iceland but never shopped there so not sure what thier fresh produce is like, but delivery is free.

Sue 😊😊

Bazmack48 profile image

We ordered from Iceland at the start of the first lockdown as they were the only ones with slots available. I was very surprised at the quality and range of items. Used them a few times since.

Bellerini profile image
Bellerini in reply to Bazmack48

Hi Bazmack,Thanks for your reply. I'll give iceland a try. Wasn't happy with asda especially at Xmas no delivery's for 2 weeks so obvs us extremely vulnerable are not supposed to eat at Xmas but had to stay with them as it was the only slot I was offered. 😊

I have used waitrose for a long while now minimum order £40 for free delivery. I had delivery this morning and my bread was free as it had a bad date, 2 days time. I have a terrific service always from them. The drivers always wear a mask and sanitise their hands before bringing shopping to the door. I like mine packed in carrier bags fir ease and pay 40p for them. Give them a go if they are in your area.

Bellerini profile image

Hi SuzieThanks for Yr reply. Unfortunately waitrose is at the other side of Leeds so not on thier delivery route, but thank you. 😊

Good idea Jo. We had free delivery from Asda for a Friday slot between 10-11. After October they started charging me £6.50 for that same slot. Terrible! I won’t shop with them now.

Hope you’re ok and staying safe. Xxx

Yes thank you I am fine , just bored .......trusting you are well . Am going to investigate Sainsburys , don't want to go back to shopping with Morrison's , & have never been a fan of the co op,. Not much choice left...!

JerryMaren did not imply you were making anything up she was agreeing with my comment.

Sainsburys may have some £1 slots but it is still a minimum spend of £40.

If you are clinically vulnerable and you are unable to afford that, you will have no option but to go out to buy food.Local councils do not supply food.

£50 a week to spend on food ?? That would be a luxury,a month would be more realistic. That money would be for all other expenses, phone ,clothing etc.

Those on a low income do not get FREE rent they receive a contribution [as rent allowance is not in line with most rental charges]and have to make up the shortfall themselves. And all the other benefits ?? basic dental treatment and essential prescriptions.

The minimum amount this government says you need to live on is far from adequate, especially if you are on your own.You will still have to pay the same heating, electricity, gas etc as a couple.

For some it is a daily struggle just to get by and have to prioritise spending and do not live the comfortable 'supported' life that those who are well heeled presume.

Many clinically vulnerable ENJOY these benefits ???

No one enjoys being on sickness or disability benefits.

I think you ae wasting your breath Comino.some people are so out of touch with reality when it comes to those in care and dependant on a state that pays lip service to thier needs .

It is only when you try to support those people that you realise that social services either can't cope, have not the funds or staff to support them or basicaly spend any extra funds they recieve from the government on just about anything other than the people who most need the funds, that is the reality of the situation in the Uk at the moment and no amount of propaganda or passing the buck to charitys is going to alleviate it any day soon. :(
