Study finds over 80 percent of COVID-19 patients have vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in men.

Over 80 percent of 200 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Spain have vitamin D deficiency, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Vitamin D is a hormone the kidneys produce that controls blood calcium concentration and impacts the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a variety of health concerns, although research is still underway into why the hormone impacts other systems of the body. Many studies point to the beneficial effect of vitamin D on the immune system, especially regarding protection against infections.

Very interesting statistic 2greys. A reminder to take my Vitamin D - and try and get my family to take it as well.

Very surprising given the sunnier climate Spain affords more than somewhere like the UK and also given their Mediterranean diet too.

There is very little vitamin D found in food other than with oily fish. It is made mainly in the body as an ultra violet interaction with the skin.

Oh I know that but even fish I thought they ate lots of that

Not just any old fish it has to be oily fish. Types of oily fish are,

trout,

salmon.

sardines.

pilchards.

kippers.

eels.

whitebait.

mackerel.

herring.

tuna.

in reply to 2greys

Sardines definitely don’t agree with me

for 'kippers' - read herring.

Love them - the proper smoked ones of course ... not dyed.

Cojones 2 Greys. The Climate in Spain gives Natural Vitamin D with the Sun for Most of the Year, I only ever had to be Prescribed Vit D once I had Lived Back here for 1 year, back in 2013, I now have to take Vit D twice Daily. All my Family in Spain from young to Old do have enough Natural Vit D in their Systems. Some of these "Researches" are too Much. My Daughter Today who went to see her Oncologist in Spain and have her Bloods Done, shows her Vit D is Sufficient. Have a Good Evening. x

80 % of 200 is a pretty pathetic study, hardly worth commenting on given that Spain has 1,174,916 recorded cases of people with covid 19.

Dr John Campbell has mentioned about this in Spain during a couple of his videos as well. This study was carried out in just one hospital.

I think you (and why am I not surprised - bearing in mind some of your previous posts on other issues) and others are being unreasonably harsh on 2greys. I have read on many occasions the importance of taking vitamin D tablets in this UK climate. I take them (on doctor's advice) and shall continue to do so.

2greys -Don't be cowed or bullied into not contributing just because a few people are trying to demean you.

Nobody is trying to demean the poster nor indeed saying that vit D is not beneficial to our health, however as the poster agreed the survey conducted was a very small sample of people from one hospital in comparison to the over one million people that had tested positive for Covid 109 in Spain .

I think you will find that 2 greys neither feels bullied or cohearsed into reducing his contributions to our forum. :)

I think that what 2greys meant, and I am open to correction, was that this was in ONE hospital. Is there a possibility that this could be replicated in every other hospital in Spain if tests were undertaken?

Probably unlikely given the abundance of sunshine in Spain and the fact that most people spend a lot of time outdoors and the fact that in general they consume a far healthier diet than we do in the UK,i have personal knowledge of that fact having a property in rural Spain and knowing many Spanish people.

That then begs the question. Why are 160 in that ONE hospital suffering from Vitamin D deficiency. Perhaps there are no Spanish among them.

Coud it possibly be that a direct result of the covid infection itself has seen a depletion in their vit d levels.i am begining to think that some people are putting far too much emphasis on vit d levels but i do appreciate that correct recommended levels of any vitamins will contribute to better survival chances from any type of infection.

I take Vit D supplement but confused as to the amount I should take. Any suggestions would be welcome. 🤔😊

10mg per day is more than sufficient. Can be bought in any pharmacy.

Stay safe
