Why is my phemgh sticky and thick?

Hello,

I take 2 puffs of Seratide and Montelukast which i was put on due to sinus problems. My asthma is well controlled however every 7 to 10 days i have difficultly bringing up phemgh it gets stuck in my throat which is so scary as i feel I am going to choke. It coats my throat and my voice goes hoarse until its out. Before this only happened about once very six months. The phemgh is very sticky, thick and stingy. Once out I am fine.

I have been at home shielding. My partner is a key worker therefore we have been using lots of bleach and disinfectant.

Did drinking water help?

Try drinking 2 litres of water a day ,it helps to clear mucus and huff it up is easier than coughing it up, not as much strain on the throat,I suffer from bronchiectasis and always have excess mucus to clear

I get very thick, sticky mucus. To help it I drink a lot, decaff tea and coffee, water, herbal tea and a glass of pineapple juice daily. The decaff is because ordinary tea and coffee act as diuretics so pull the fluid away from all your body cells and make you pee.

I try to avoid too much processed food but as I'm greedy and during lockdown our usual food sources have been unavailable I've had to make do. And yes, my mucus has thickened up a bit.

I do the breathing cycle to clear my lungs. (instructions can be found from British Lung Foundation or on u tube). I use a flutter too. (A gadget like a bubble pipe but with a heavy ball inside it. It vibrates as you blow through it so loosens the mucus) This was on prescription from my GP.

My mucus thickens if I have to use my ventolin inhaler more than usual too. A fine balance between open airways with lose mucus or very open but sticky mucus.

If the problem persists contact your medical team xx

Try this. Spoonful of honey followed by glass of water. Honey is naturally good as anti bacteria and also loosens mucous. Other posts give good advice on fluids and breathing exercises. Look also for box breathing. Especially when feeling stressed. Best wishes.

Be careful with bleach fumes, really bad for asthmatics.

Thank you so much for your advice. I am so worried because i will be going to work soon.... what if this happens at work.

I bought Mucus Clear from Amazon however have not had the courage to try it yet. Anyone else tried this herbal medication?

Try cutting down on dairy products too. They don't produce more mucus but do make it thicker. Drinking more water is good for helping to thin it down.

Giving up smoking is great so well done. It sounds like this is your lungs still fighting to clear themselves which can go on for many months.

There is a good smoking site on here called Quit so why ask on there as well? x
