Shielding or not

In view of the change to us being shielded should we take advantage of the easing. I think that having stayed put for ten weeks thus four more to the end of June will not be too hard to manage. I think since I am retired and have family to assist with my needs I will wait to see if there is an increase in the number of cases before venturing out even for a day. Well that’s what I think. What do others say as for many the last few weeks must have been hard

I have been informed today that my next Oncology appointment at the end of August will be a telephone consultation not face to face. That is surely saying something, the risk will still be too high.

I’m seeing some family but will carry on as I have been until I see how the number of cases is affected. I suspect it’ll go up, esp as there’ve been crowds of people out eg at seaside resorts (I live in one) & the Black Lives Matter demos. I’m a bit worried about these people. The deputy CMO said yesterday the risk of catching cv outdoors is very low but keeping 2m separate when lots of people are about isn’t easy

I've lived as a prisoner in my own home for quite a few years before they introduced shielding. Being told it's safe to venture out won't wash with me. I might just as well have a bath in a cesspit.

Very wise. I wont be changing my MO any time soon either and I not shielding. I'll still walk the dog & pop in to the shop with extreme caution. Mask and gloves in the shop only when its very quiet.

To my mind its "let them all out and see what happens". No thanks.

I’m quite happy to carry on as I have been doing the past couple of weeks. I’ve had a friend come sit in the garden with me twice a week when it’s been sunny both very careful to social distance. Fortunately I have a park outside my gate that is usually deserted so I’ve been going for a walk there every day since lockdown. I will not venture further until I feel safe to do so, not even after 30th if I feel at risk at all. Definitely not anywhere indoors where people are. I’m sure everyone on here is being ‘sensible’ as the risk is still great.

P.S my colleagues at AICU NUHospital are Now gearing up their critical care facilities and team for a ‘ second wave’ I feel this is probable. ?

Hi Mike,

I am like you, I am also retired. I can’t say I have found lockdown hard at all. I must admit that I am lucky because I have my husband here with me. We also have big gardens ( a bit too big now!) which keep me busy and away from people.

I feel the rate of infection is a bit high where we live, so we will be staying put, taking lots of precautions.

However, for those who are on their own or who don’t have garden space it must be a welcome move.

Although we live in a village with no known cases I do not feel at all confident about taking any trips out. The furthest we have been today is my son’s home a quarter of a mile away and had a socially distant coffee with him. In any case my husband won’t let me and in any case he is the one doing the driving!

New coronavirus clusters have been reported in Wuhan city - where the virus first emerged - and the north-eastern province of Jilin in China.

Wuhan reported five new cases on Monday, after confirming its first case since 3 April on Sunday.

Authorities said the small cluster of cases were all from the same residential compound.

China has been easing restrictions in recent weeks and cases had been declining.

Health authorities and experts have warned that as countries emerge from strict lockdowns and people move around more freely, a rise in infections is likely.

I agree with you. It really isn't worth the risk but I am really missing my daughters and grandchildren. They are all miles away

You can only be 100% safe if rhe virus is eliminated globally or you get innoculated against it.

Until then you are at some sort of risk.

Absolutely - I am staying put too. The Govt have allowed everyone else to meet 6 other people, some children are back to school and on the same day they say ' OK let the highly vulnerable out for a walk as well'. Hardly guided by science - the numbers of confirmed cases and deaths are still too high for me. We were originally told 30th June, with maybe an extension, so I am going to wait and watch!

As sheilding and being vunerable until this virus has been eliminated or a vaccine ...I feel we are all going to have to weigh up our own risks. I am not in work do not have a mortgage young children or elderly parents...so in somewhat a previleged place to take risks or not solely on a health risk.
