Researchers from Russia and Italy have proposed a compact sensor system that can implement the functionality of the electronic nose and developed a reproducible technology for its manufacture. This device is designed as flexible electronics that can analyze exhaled air, as well as identify pathologies of the respiratory tract and organs.

During the experiments, the device demonstrated high accuracy in determining patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, which increases the risk of complications when infected with COVID-19.

?Better than the detection dogs we have recently heard about in the press

certainly easier but dogs have an inbuilt appeal to us humans so get the publicity.

Canine or electronic. to my mind anything that simplifies and speeds up detection has to be a great advancement.

Take my case as an example and I am not alone with this. I did not get a COPD diagnosis until at the severe stage with an FEV1 of 37% and after a CT Scan a further diagnosis of Emphysema. I have gone from bad to worse with other co-morbidities since, over 4 years and before the virus my FEV1 was at 28%. I would certainly have benefited from an earlier diagnosis and to have made the essential lifestyle changes earlier, I would most certainly have a better quality of life, lung function and life expectancy by now.
