Following an earlier study that validated the loss of smell and taste as indicators of SARS-CoV-2 infection, researchers at UC San Diego Health report in newly published findings that olfactory impairment suggests the resulting COVID-19 disease is more likely to be mild to moderate, a potential early indicator that could help health care providers determine which patients may require hospitalization.
The findings were published online April 24, 2020 in the journal International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology .
“One of the immediate challenges for health care providers is to determine how to best treat persons infected by the novel coronavirus,” said first author Carol Yan, MD, a rhinologist and head and neck surgeon at UC San Diego Health. “If they display no or mild symptoms, can they return home to self-quarantine or will they likely require hospitalization? These are crucial questions for hospitals trying to efficiently and effectively allocate finite medical resources.”

Interestingly, both of my next door neighbours had the Virus with loss of smell and taste ...and both had it mildly. Only one remains with the olfactory loss weeks later whilst the others is restored. They both work as Gp’s. I worried I might catch it as I spent a half hour chatting and drinking coffee with one of them just a couple of days before she showed symptoms. I was panicking for a couple of weeks. Fortunately I’ve been virus free so far.
Yes! I had cold symptoms and ears itching this week. I’d read loss of smell was an early sign so I decided to test myself. The hubby passed gas and I got close to see if I could smell. Well there has to be a better more dignified way. However, I realized I definitely had not lost my sense of smell.🤢. I don’t recommend this method !
I did not loose my sense of smell or taste as such, both were grossly distorted though. I could not eat my staple fruit of bananas for days because of an overly powerful scent of perfume from them. The only thing that smelt and tasted right, was marmite.
