Pleurisy?

I had a really tight chest for about five days which got worse and turned to pain so i was advised to go to A&E as i also had a temperature, only other symptom was achy shoulders down to my elbow. No cough, no sore throat ect.

The A&E doctor told me he suspected pleurisy after listening to my chest and blood results came back with infection, however X-ray came back normal. They gave me co-amoxyclav and paracetamol.

I should mention I’m a 30 year old female with asthma that flares up every now and then but is never severe.

I’m now one week after finishing antibiotics and after initially feeling as though i was getting better day by day to now feeling like I’m back to square one. The uncomfortable tight feeling is back, I’m still taking paracetamol but things seem to effect me like strong smells that feel like they sit on your chest...does that make sense?

Does anyone else get this where strong smells effect your chest? Maybe it’s because hayfever is high, but I’ve been in all day.

Thanks, it’s no better... this seems unusual doesn’t it? Had it since 20th March and started the antibiotics on 30th March.

Perhaps the infection needs a different antibiotic . Could you ask your surgery if they could send a sputum sample off for you as you’ve had it so long ?

I have another call with my doctor on Tuesday so will see what she says. That might be the next step i think.

Oh dear, I feel for you. Pleurisy is so painful and can last several weeks. I've had it several times along with a chest infection, twice it was followed by pneumonia. The pain is very similar to fractured ribs. Please don't hesitate to contact your gp if you're no better on Tuesday, 999 if your temperature shoots up.

Lots of people with different lung diseases have tight chest with strong smells, best avoid them while you're unwell and bear I mi d that a tight painful chest with the inability to take a deep breath is one of the symptoms......I'm sure you diagnosis of pleurisy was correct, it's easily heard through a stethoscope .

I do hope you feel better soon. P

An yes, the horrible pleurisy. 😩You have my sympathy Coop20 . I'll just say it's one of those things that take AGES to get over. And sometimes you feel a whole lot better , then unexpectedly worse again. Please rest and just take it easy. If there are any huge changes please call for advice. I hope you feel better very soon. Best wishes. xx 🌿🌷🍃🌹🌿🌺🍃🌻

I have exactly the same problem now, just posted on my profile. Only a week after diagnosis and treatment, the pain suddenly appeared on the left side of the chest, when the right side started to get better. Also these ups and downs on the pathway to recovery are draining. My pleurisy was diagnosed after a bacterial chest infection which followed a flu or corona virus infection in March. Asthma is also suspected by GP, but hasn't be confirmed with further tests.

Take care, drink plenty of water, apply heat (it worked for me) and rest- hoping you recover soon. x Anita

Hi. Cooper. I too have recently been diagnosed with pleurisy. I was put on antibiotics. And thankfully its getting better. Unfortunately my husband has now started to show the same symptoms. I am wondering because I have now heard of more people with this. If it has something to do with covid. My 76 year old mother in law is a nurse. She has it along with 3 of her co workers. They had no P. P. E. Stay safe.

Hi Marcella12. My husband just came back from A&E. He has been diagnosed with pleurisy aswell. You are right this does relate with Covid these days especially because my husband had covid symptoms...and this is 3rd week and still he is having breathing issue and today the lung pain got worst. He is on antibiotics already which are finishing today aswell. I am just hoping he gets well soon. The pain was unbearable.
