I take it all the time as a prophylactic as I can no longer take azithromycin. I tolerate it very well. The only downside is you cannot expose your skin to the sun as you’ll burn very easily, so it’s long sleeves, trousers & a sun hat all summer. And factor 50 on your hands, even they burn

As a prophylactic I take 1 x 100mg capsule every day, all year round

Thank you. I take Azithromycin on Monday Wednesday and Friday. Ok on them at moment. It's worth a thought for later. I do take Doxycycline as a rescue pack.

I think azithromycin is much better as a prophylactic. It reduces inflammation & helps thin the mucus. Doxy isn’t as good for that. Unfortunately, once you’ve grown a non-tb mycobacterium in your sputum, they won’t let you have it anymore

Hi, I have doxycyclin as a rescue pack. My new consultant prescribed it. I was given Amoxiicillin previously with no problems. I havent needed to take it yet . But as I enjoy gardening and being outdoors I wonder if I should ask my doctorif I could change to another one in the event I get an infection.
On reflection I shouldn't be bothering about this with all thats happening around us. But as we get so little Vitamin D being outdoors would enable us to have some. Its also something to look forward to.

I also have Doxycycline as my rescue for flare ups. For me it works every time, about once a year on average. It beats Amoxycillin and Erythromycin for me.
I have had two courses of this antibiotic with no problems except mild stomach upset.
I have taken it often.
I find it best to eat something before I take it, especially the first double dose. If I take it on an empty stomach it can make me vomit.
A gp recommended that I stand up to swallow the tablet with plenty of water.
As Hanne writes it makes the skin sensitive to sunlight , so be very careful.

Ditto re eating something reasonably substantial before taking doxycycline!

Thank you. Will have my cereal first. And it says full cup of water. Touchwood I tend to only get chest infections winter and beginning of spring but will be careful with sun.
The photo sensitivity can last long after you stop taking the tablets, so please be aware of that. Not everyone has this reaction, of course, but just be careful.
I got badly burned hands in Spain, last February. Had covered Up from head to toe, but must have washed sunscreen off the hands! Even this year, in Thailand, I got some burning (but less severe) on the front of my legs, from a 15 min. walk in sunshine.
As an antibiotic, it’s very effective, just watch in case you’re one of the more susceptible of us?
Thanks for the tips on eating prior to taking. I have it in my rescue pack but hadn't realised that's why I usually vomit shortly after taking the first day's double dose. I'll bear your advice in mind next time I need to take it.
When My mild bronchiectasis is infected I take 100 mg morning and night for 10 days- it’s wonderful My infection then disappears after 1 day but I take all of the course
I use that for chest infections, generally works quickly for me with no problems. My prescription is two a day. I wonder why it varies?
Taking 2 100mg initiay, the 1 a day is a normal dose quite often. However it is more usual with severe bronchiectasis to be prescribed 1 100mg twice a day.

I’ve been rescued by Doxycycline so many times as I’m allergic to penicillin. Make sure you eat something before taking it - even just a cracker - or it can make you sick. Sometimes I need 2 weeks rather than 1 for a bad infection though.
I have it as my go to antibiotic. Works a treat. Need a 10 day course but I have bronchiectisis.
Thank you had it in hospital couple of years ago and seem to remember it working fast. Will remember to est my weetabix first.
They tried it with me once to zero effect so went back to the old faithful Ammocycillian.
It could have been a gram positive bacteria you had eg strep pneumoniae, which would have been sensitive to Amox, Doxy would be used with a gram negative bacteria eg Haemopylus Influenzae or any bacteria which has come back from the lab as being sensitive to it. There is not a good or bad antibiotic. The best antibiotic prescribed is the one which is sensitive to the bacteria grown. I feel Amox is much maligned as it can be very effective for some infections and I am glad it does the trick for you.

Wish i could take it, have tried but makes e vomit quite severely, tried with and without food, but makes me sick and lasts for a few hrs, so GP has determined i am allergic to it.
Now take azithromycin, with good effect.
To me, it’s a wonder drug. It knocked a six week chest infection on the head when all the other antibiotics idvhad failed.
I take 100g a day from November to mid April. My consultant stops it in April so that I can then benefit from the sunshine. It works well for me. I have amoxycillin for flare ups. It does say on the leaflet that Doxy should be taken with or after food and with a full glass of water. I always adhere to this and have had no problems. xx Moy
Doxy is my go to rescue antibiotic and besides some mild sickness and tummy upset, I tolerate it pretty well. I just eat a cracker or biscuit when I take it.
My course is 100mg once a day for 14 days and it usually does the trick.
Before this I was taking 500mg four times a day of Co-Amoxiclav for 14 days which really upset my stomach, the pill size was huge and I always had problems swallowing it anyway.
Doxy is efficient and quick in doing the job it is supposed to.

These are my rescue pack antibiotic and they are quite good if any infection not cleared at the end of course see GP in case you need more
I have taken a 2 week course starting with 2 on the first day then 1 a days for next 13 days. Just be careful being in the sun they are sun sensitive

Pete has taken it and done very well. He takes azithromycin three times a week but occasionally doxycycline when necessary.

They’re my rescue too. 2 on day one then 6 more days at 1 a day. Interesting to hear about the potential vomiting. That’s happened to me several times so I now have to take 1 a day over 8 days as 2 at once make me feel really rough but certainly do the job as I’m allergic to penicillin. Take a full glass of water and stay upright. And don’t have any alcohol that week as it seriously inhibits their effectiveness. The other side effect I get is a bit of a change in my bowels but clears up a couple of days after I finish.
I used it for about 3 years as a prophylactic. It didn’t stop me getting chest infections but I got fewer. After a really bad one when I came up with markers for sepsis I was changed to azithromycin and I haven’t had a chest infection since.,
Hi spacecat1, I take this for sinus problems and I have also taken it for cellul itis. It is normal to take 2 the first day and usually 1 for 6 days after. I have not had any problems with this drug. Take care, Maximonkey

Yes take 2 on first day is called pre loading and an acceptable practice for certain drugs ...under your doctor`s direction only of course
I have had same method from my GP no worries...hope this eases your worry?
I was given Doxycyclin in hospital and was allergic to it unfortunately. It's supposed to be a good antibiotic with good results for others.
I took it in January when I had an ordinary cold that turned into a cough. Panicked and probably didn’t need it but GP suggested I took it at the start of any cold.
My husband has Doxycycline in his rescue pack but I have never felt it did 'the job'. After speaking to his GP about it she gave him a prescription for Amoxicillin to add to the rescue pack.
It’s a strong one made me a bit sick at first and true over sun you will burn but I have them wen bad as u do need different ones

I had a very bad chest infection last year and I had 2 weeks of steroids and Amoxycillin without any improvement. My doctor then gave me Doxycycline and my infection cleared within 3 days.

So far hearing positive things about this tablet except for the possible vomiting and sunshine I will.be careful be good if chest infection clears up faster than with antibiotics I have been. Take care

I think doxycycline are brilliant, especially if u used to to the normal 1es like amoxicillin or clarithamycine etc , they usually help with infections .
Works well for me as I'm allergic to Penicillin.
This is part of my emergency kit and have used it a lot of the last 5 years. Always found it very effective but side effects are unpleasant and can be mood changing.
Doxycycline is part of my emergency pack in case I get the start of a chest infection. Normally it is 2 on first day and then 1a day for 6 days. Doxycycline is a stronger antibiotic than Azithromycin. The few times I have had to use doxycycline it has worked very well.

I’ve found it has worked well for me in the past. The only problem I had with it was the time I took it on an empty stomach which ended up with me vomiting so violently that I burst the tiny blood vessels in my eyes and ended up with red eyes for several days. Won’t be repeating that mistake again.
I have it as an Emergency Antibiotic. I’ve had to use it several times. No bad side effects, but of course it’s a very personal thing.

Yes, I'm prescribed Doxycycline. My chest infection starts to clear within a few days.
Hi, Yes I have taken Dioxcyline many times over the past 2 years. My consultant in Respiratory Clinic prescribed this for me over winter months. I took 2 a day continuous for 3 months with no side effects. I have bronchiectasis and mild asthma which at moment is under control. Good luck
I have taken doxycycline for years , I can never see any improvement, even after a week or so , I was prescribed steroids along with the doxy, but was taken off as I have all the side effects. Therefore doxy is of no use on its own to me , maybe it could be okay for you. I probably have four courses in a year.
I have Emphysema late stage, I just resign myself it’s the Emphysema stage where there’s no return, I don’t relish the thought but I’m realistic.
I hope they help you , but give it a while, I’ve read posts on here where patients are on a continuous ABX , and they refer to their Consultant, I have seen a Consultant once 18months ago after pneumonia. And 2days in hospital. Which I thought was not long enough, patients sitting waiting for beds.
He helped. I was a Nurse in my other life, and was shocked , as I have never been a patient.

Thank you Janet made a note of everything had copd since 2007 2017 I went downhill lots of chest infections in and out of hospital but sorted me out have to wear a mask in bed for because I retain which turns they hadn't picked up.on it and was causing my breathing problems. Now sorted. So take each day as it comes.take care.x
Hi I was using concentrator 17 hrs, as I am also a retainer, I am checked twice a year by oxygen nurses, now using an INOGEN ONE, too weak to carry the bottle.
Suits me fine, I have attended Re Hab numerous times and found it very helpful, I’m not really fit enough now which I’m striving to alter.
I am housebound now as I am unable to walk very far, which infuriates me as I’m not giving up, best wishes and good health Janet.
Yes I've taken it! Like you stated take 2 to start then one a day after. The wotk very well but apparently you need to stay out of sunlight

I have doxycycline In my rescue pack. I take 2 on day 1 and 1 a day for next 6 days. I’ve found it works well for chest infections and I haven’t had any side effects - I’ve been taking it for a couple of years now.

Hi this is a very good antibiotic works well have had a few courses of it myself but my partner Jim who has stage 4 COPD uses it quite regularly along with steroids and thank God it still helps. Hope you will feel much better once course has finished get well soon 😊

Hi, Yes, it’s part of my ‘Rescue Pack’ for my asbestosis. If I get a chest infection I self-administrator it. The pack contains Doxycyclene 100mg (which I start with 2 for the first dose) then one daily afterwards. The other item in the pack is Prednisolone, which I take 6 x 5mg tablets.
The pack lasts 7 days and my infection responds after 3-4 days. When I use the pack I phone the surgery and they issue a scrip for me to keep when needed in future Geoff
I take 2 or3 courses a year but have noticed I get heart palpitations when taking them.Anyone else?

I take these quite a lot, and made the mistake the first time of not fully reading the instructions. Within the first 30 minutes of taking my first two I was throwing up. I didn’t have anything on my stomach. Not a mistake I have made since! 😂😂 they are very effective.
I take it when I have a chest infection combined wi9thj steroids I have no problems. They are part of my rescue pack and have been on them off and on for about 15 years.
Yes ive have had Doxycycline a few times. Its a stronger anti biotic than amoxicillian. Amoxicillian never clears up my chest infections but Doxycycline does.
Yes I used to be on amoxicillin for quite a few years when I got chest infection it never seen to clear up. Kept asking doctor at time if I needed a change he didnt agree. Took ages to persuade him. Managed to wear him down. And i do have co amoxiclav. Gp wants me to try doxycecline when I get a really bad chest infection so they are my emergency pack.
Thats the one I take and it always works unlike amoxicillian which I used to have.

this anti-biotic is the one that I am always given when I have a flare up. I don't really think it works, certainly not one me.
I have used this drug 3 years ago, I think I had a reaction to this drug, came out in spots on my face, but I am glad my GP, sent me to the hospital at the right time.
Took it for my stomach, didn't stop, but went somewhere else and they said it was something else.
I have this AB in my rescue pack and find it works well better than Amox, and i cannot take

Doxy is my preferred antibiotic for occasional cellulitis. My usual dose is 2 x 100mg on the first day then 100mg for 6 days after that.
I'm currently on my 3rd day of 7 and have noticed the first slight improvement today. I've also noticed some others on here have taken higher doses than me, for different things.
Has anyone increased the dose of doxy they've taken when their first dose hasn't got rid of their infection please? I don't just mean carried on taking the same dose for another week but actually increased their dose in that 2nd week. Many tia for any replies.
