Steroid Skin?

Since taking Seretide, I have developed very itchy, scaly & sore eczema type patches on my left hand and left leg. A bit of research shows that this could be caused by the steroids. I have been putting doctor prescribed Betnovate on, but a) it’s not helping and b) if caused by steroids it seems a bit counterproductive to put more steroid cream on. Does anyone else have this problem and if so what do you use to help alleviate the problem please?

I also use a steroid inhaler , am 67 and until a few months ago never before had eczema but now have itchy scaley skin on my neck & behind my ear & on occasions on my elbows . Like you I've had cream from my GP but the rash always returns .

I was on Seretide for many years with no problems . Now on Trimbow. My hands have eczema now from all the hand washing and sanitiser gel !

I have a big problem with this and was also given Betnovate which didn't work. I've also tried Timodine which didn't work either. E45 eases the discomfort for a short time only. I haven't been able to find anything that stops it increasing in area even.

Same problem, medication caused eczema. I wash with aqueous cream. Avoid perfumed products. Used betnovate only when very dry and sore.

hi purple. i, too, had this problem when transferred from single-med to twin-med inhaler. including steroid. like you i did the research. i asked gp, who offered steroid cream. i politely declined, on the basis of steroid being the problem, and anyway i didn't want to increase steroid use. she gave me an alternative cream, but it was no more use than handcream/moisturiser : ie it helps for as long as it takes to apply, then the burning/itching sensation returns. i get this itching on the upper side of my forearms and on my hands only. not all the time, but when it comes i scratch like mad and then as i begin to pierce the skin it's a matter of extreme will to stop myself scratching more.

i've found ONE thing that helps at all, and you won't get a prescription for this but it's worth a try.

cold water. first run the affected area under cold water, until it feels really really cold. (if you're area's less accessible, try a cold wet flannel?) once it's almost unbearably cold, stop and dab dry. this will last for a while, and often simply ends the bout of itching.

I had problems with my skin dry/ scaly/ itchy before I got my diagnosis.usual steroid cream prescribed by doc.

Eventually practice nurse prescribed Aveeno,there’s all sorts of variations of it in pharmacies/ supermarkets.

Using it ,gradually,my skin improved.

Docs are quick to precribe steroid cream,in my experience moisturisers are better. Avoid the highly perfumed.

Used to have to get out of bed because my feet itches so much in the night.

Sat at 3 am,creaming your feet is no joke,

I hope you can get some respite from the itching, stay safe
