Under Pressure.

I've never been good at cooking

My wife wore the chef's hat

Now that I am on my own

I thought I 'll have a go at that

It's not been very successful

Everything I cook burns

Leading me to consider

Going out and eating worms

I've bought a lot of kitchen toys

To help me in my quest

The microwave and ready meals

Has so far been the best.

Then I remembered long ago

A pressure cooker thing

It huffed and puffed and let off steam

Until you heard a ping

The food it cooked was very quick

And tender as can be

So I've gone and bought one

And soon I hope to see.

Some food cooked to perfection

Hoping nothing will erupt

So that I will say to myself

"Well.....blow me down....or up!"

You know that i have always held you in the highest esteem

Now i am even more impressed you have adopted a machine of steam

I will stick with my old microwave for heating up my soup

Cos if i adopted your new measures it would all end up as gloop. :( x

in reply to skischool

I hear it's very good for soup

And does a proper job

I just need something to put in there

I've been eyeing up my dog

Good luck with it Don. I remember my mum having one of those, probably in 70's. I was always frightened of it when the steam started, thought it would blow up! 🤯🥺 I invested in a slow cooker a while ago, only trouble is you have to prepare HOURS before you need it 😂😂 but it is good for one pot cooking. Take care and happy cooking. The song 'under pressure' by Queen came to mind.

So Scruff's and Midge and seasoning are soon destined for the pot

No need to worry of food shortages,i think we'll feed a lot

We will be hailed as heroes and maybe even get an award

But the league of animal lovers will put us to the sword. :( x

I love my slow cooker and pressure cooker I have an all in one thingy.

I will now make a confession.

I was passing the butcher the other day and there was a sign in the window saying he was selling bones for dogs.

Well, I don’t have a dog but got some anyway, into the slow cooker it went and cooked all day.

It made lovely stock for a soup!😁

J

in reply to judes

Your secret will be safe here. 😉 Bones for dogs eh? Seems like a fair swap, the dogs would be recycled?

Next time save some of the stock for gravy judes mmm, you can buy a mix of bones forn the butches for a copule of quid x

in reply to Izb1

When I were a lad the butcher used to give bones away free. In fact my dog used to go and do her own shopping and she wasn't the only one, he had his regular customers.

Until it became fashionable to have bone broth I used to get it free from the butchers too. I love the fact that your dog used to visit the butcher for a bone x

in reply to Izb1

The dog scene in the 1930's was so completely different, 'walking your dog' would have had people 🤣. You just opened the door and let them out. 🐕.........🍖

I have found I am frying to remember what I saw Granny do all those years ago. Have a slow cooker, and am trying to come to terms with a microwave, so no matter what food gets delivered I should be able to do something with it. I feel that it may be easier to get the very cheap cuts of meat from the supermarkets as not so many people know how to cook it.

in reply to SORRELHIPPO

Apparently the secret is the longer you cook it for, the more tender it will be. Doing that without burning it, which is what I had been trying to do, you need a slow cooker or a pressure cooker. A slow cooker is slow, and a pressure cooker is fast, that was my reasoning. What I now learning is that using a pressure cooker needs more skill than a slow cooker.

If I’m stewing meat, have a big casserole dish which will only go on the stove top.

I bring it to a simmer (a few bubbles starting)

I then turn it down as far as possible.

I check it every 45 minutes or so,you need to set your timer.if it doesn’t seem to be boiling it doesn’t matter,it’s building up flavour.

If you need more water ,add water which has been boiled in the kettle.

It takes ages but it’s worth it. Timer essential if you’re like me and get easily distracted.

Good Luck Don

Try not to put too much liquid in your pressure cooker it doesn’t evaporate as much as if you were cooking something in a saucepan.

I consider myself fortunate in these strange times that I can make a meal out of next to nothing.

A few manky veg in the pot bit of seasoning, great soup.

Experience of posh meat on a posh BBQ isn't going to be much help to me here. 🤔

So if we see an unidentified flying object heading from your direction, we'll know who it belongs to.

No offer of arranging a soft landing then eh. 😟

You might land on my bony hips. Then you really would be flying through the air. 😏

Great little gadget but please read the book carefully first x

in reply to Izb1

Quite a big book came with it and I've only read the introduction, which was enough to make me a little apprehensive. I won't be rushing into trying it, thank you. 😉x

When we first got a pressure cooker in the mid 70s. My husband 'in his wisdom' decided to give it a bit more cooking time than the booklet said. When he took the lid off, we had the beginnings of mashed potato! The potatoes were in small fragments.

in reply to moogle

They would have made excellent chips, clever lad your husband. 😁

Another great rhyme from a gentleman not averse to trying something new.

I had one many moons ago. If I want to be sure that meat, casseroles etc are tender now I slow cook them in the oven but a pressure cooker, once you get the knack of using it, gets a meal ready in a fraction of the time.

I wish you success in developing your culinary skills.

Morning Mr.D and I'm playing catch-up AGAIN.

A terrific rhyme and we've got a very old pressure cooker, probably too old to risk using, but they are such a clean way of making so many tasty meals. You are transforming your kitchen with new gadgets and gizmo 's, so it will be interesting to hear which was your best, can't now do without, buy!! All in good time eh? 🐿💕

in reply to SquirrelsHolt

I believe they make food very tender. My old Mum used to say before she died "If I can't eat it with a spoon I don't want it." 🥣

SquirrelsHolt profile image
SquirrelsHolt in reply to

Now that's something my dear old Grandma used to say too!! She, like many of her era, always had an old wives tale or a tempting fate, doom & gloom saying that as children we'd listen to and laugh or cry because they scared us! 🐿💕
